Been out of the TV market for awhile. The last TV I purchased was in 2010 and my biggest decision was whether or not to go LED or Plasma.
For anyone who has bought a TV in the last year or so, what did you go with and why? I've always been a big fan of Sony and Samsung.

I don't know much about TV's, but I did come across this deal circulating online today, and just purchased it
https://accessories.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=A7851809
50 inch LG 1080P 120hz
with purchase, you receive a free $300.00 Dell E-Gift card, you can purchase another product at a later date with, or you can do like some people and sell the card on Ebay, making the cost of this tv only a couple hundred bucks

I just bought this deal myself... I need a new TV for the living room and a new one for the bedroom. The $300 sold me for the next purchase for the bedroom.

everyone who spent more than $300 on his/her TV will declare their decision the best.
Very similar to sunglasses & the school zone they bought their house in

I work in the TV business. my best advice
don't get caught up in all the 4k and 3D hype
unless you LOVE 3d movies, don't pay extra for it
4k is great, however its 3-5 years away from being an everyday option.
remember, you have to have 3 things in order to be watching 4k-
1. a 4k TV
2. a 4k source(tv station has to be broadcasting in 4k)
3. a 4k receiver from your cable or satellite provider
it will be a few years so my advice is get the best deal for today
my rule of thumb is if its for a main room like a living or media room- go with the big name brands- Sony, Samsung, Sharp, Panasonic, etc)
if its a bedroom or secondary TV then I would get the best deal in the middle class range(Vizio, Insignia, Phillips, Toshiba). Note- some Toshibas are high end and very good TVs
just did a ton of research and got me a 70 inch 240 hertz Sharp on the wall and im very pleased. picture is outstanding
as far as LED or Plasma. both are great, Plasmas for darker rooms like a media, LED/LCD for a brighter room with sun. processor is faster on a plasma but LEDs have made some headway
honestly the 120/240 debate isn't even noticeable to the average person. some don't even like the "soap opera" effect that the 240 gives.
good luck

My Samsung Plasma that I bought 5 years ago is already going out (1" wide vertical blue and black line in the middle of the screen), so I personally will stay away from Plasma from now on.
I have and old 51" rear projection Toshiba that I bought back in 2003, that still works like new in my bedroom that my wife would like to see gone because of the space it takes up.
I ordered the above deal from dell and will have them both replaced within the next month.

Stay far away from LG.
Yes, brand does make a difference. Sharp is the best in the business with Samsung and Sony's high end panels right behind them.
Get as big of a screen as you can afford. That is the number one regret of HDTV buyers. You may think 42" is good enough, until you wish you had bought a 55" set.
Unless you are building a home theater, get an LED backlight, LCD panel. Try to get a full array panel with local dimming. Like DT said, don't get caught up in refresh rates, but be sure you know the native rate for the panel as that is most important. This should be 120Hz if at all possible.
Every good TV is going to have apps, wifi and 3D. Focus on the quality of the panel since that is what will make the most difference.
Finally, CNET.com is a great resource.

I'm so ready for a new TV. I'm hanging on to my Pioneer Elite Plasma from 2006 just because I haven't seen a TV with a better picture that I've absolutely got to have.
I am finding it hard to justify the 5K price tag when most of the TV's can be had for under a grand.
I needed two TVs for a few new areas and went the cheap route (Viz 24 / 40).

This Sharp is on sale for $599. I had a 10% off coupon and a $15 reward certificate so $550 after taxes.

I've owned multiple Samsung LCD/LED in the past and I bought a 65" Panasonic plasma just last year. Picture quality is stunning and it's like Pioneer Kuro for a fraction of the price. Too bad they don't make them anymore.
It's difficult to find a new Panasonic plasma but I believe you can still grab some new Samsung plasma because Samsung ended their production just recently. Samsung plasma are great as well.

It's a damn shame they stopped making these... yet to find another TV that measures up to one.

I just bought the Vizio 60" E series amd love it $847.00 at Sams. Initially, I was going to buy the Samsung but Sam's had both sitting side by side and I could not see $500 worth of difference.
