Nick Gillespie of Reason: Cops should wear cameras 24/7

Each of these incidents has an unmistakable racial dimension—all of the victims were black and all or most of arresting officers were white–that threatens the always tense relationships between law enforcement and African Americans. As important, the circumstances of each death are hotly contested, with the police telling one story and witnesses (if any) offering up very different narratives.
Brown’s death in particular is raising major ongoing protestsprecisely because, contrary to police accounts, witnesses claim that he had his hands up in the air in surrender when he was shot. The result is less trust in police, a situation that raises tensions across the board.
While there is no simple fix to race relations in any part of American life, there is an obvious way to reduce violent law enforcement confrontations while also building trust in cops: Police should be required to use wearable cameras and record their interactions with citizens. These cameras—various models are already on the market—are small and unobtrusive and include safeguards against subsequent manipulation of any recordings.
quote:
As Reason's Ronald Bailey pointed out last year, "Watched cops are polite cops." One study he cites found that wearing cameras by Rialto, California cops reduced use of force incidents by 60 percent and complaints against police by 88 percent.
And as Reason's Paul Detrick learned by talking with former Seattle cop Steve Ward, "Everybody behaves better when they're on video." Ward is the head of Viewvu, a company that makes wearable cameras for law enforcement.

Who's watching the Watchers? I think this may be the only way to penetrate the blue wall and hold cops accountable.

I edited to add a para...apparently the benefit cuts both ways.

Many do but "forget to record" when they know they're in the wrong.
They also want to film you but when you film them they get pissed.

Even if they did, I guarantee you the cameras would "malfunction" more than McDonalds shake machines.

This will never work.
Like any other state/govt official with power, they will just "lose" the video.

They shouldn't have an option.

As long as someone is filming.

I agree but things happen

They'll put an end to that quickly

Never? Sure there will still be corruption and problems, but I wouldn't say it would have zero effect. I think if the video was recorded to a secure server not under cop control you could circumvent some of those issues. Also if a cop turns off his camera then kills someone there would be an indication of foul play.
Youre too pessimistic.

Dude,
The friggin IRS "lost" incriminating emails.
Fricking Emails!!
If our "leaders" are able to do away with something as "intangible" as emails on multiple servers, I have no doubts whatsoever a video that is not backed up can disappear.

So no solutions, no change because it won't work...status quo. Got it.

this works, and both ways
if a kid is being a obtuse punk, the cops will be able to explain in objective terms
if the cop is being a complete a-hole the citizen will be able to display this in objective terms

Its certainly better than not having them at all.
Posted on 8/14/14 at 1:55 pm to SlowFlowPro
It's a workable solution and with current technology it's not that expensive.

OK, let's do nothing but keep it as it is and bitch that it won't work. The article cites concrete examples of it actually fricking working. READ MFers.

Aside from cost, there would literally be no down side. Although now that I think about it, personal camera equipment seems like a much better investment for police departments than MRAPs, body armor and grenade launchers.

I can see it now:
"But Chief, I got some of my jelly donut on the lens. That's why you can't see me doing something unethical..."

I'm with you, if they can afford shoulder to air rockets and armored Humvee's, they could better spend their money on camera's. The camera's would give a real view to the situation compared to the SOMETIMES blurred and one sided story, keeps everyone honest.
