Didn't say that. Don't Rex me, dude. LOL

I'm saying, if it comes down to a cop having a video, count on it disappearing if he's in the wrong. Also count on the citizen being threatened.

I know several cops and they all feel this way.

You said it would never work. Well a study of a police department that started videoing:

One study he cites found that wearing cameras by Rialto, California cops reduced use of force incidents by 60 percent and complaints against police by 88 percent.

Not working?

Who's watching the Watchers? I think this may be the only way to penetrate the blue wall and hold cops accountable.

They'll just turn the camera off when they want to beat someone's head in.

How would the cop account for the missed time?

I think this is a great idea, especially since so many PDs seem to be embracing the idea of putting cameras up in public places and filming e general public 24/7 and even using this surveillance to issue citations as they do with traffic cams. What's good for e goose is good for the gander. They don't have a leg to stand on in their opposition to being recorded.

I totally agree!!!
I just wanted spidermanTUba PhD to consider that they would have to answer for the "gap". Its not like missing footage from an attack would help the cop's side.

THIS!

If they wanna use cameras to write tickets and create revenue, they can damn well wear a camera to create an accurate record of police actions.

The cops I know that wear them are only required to turn them on when they exit their squad car. I imagine it'd be pretty easy to just forget.

If they forget, they get fined/lose pay. They would remember every single time after that.

I also support forcing cops to follow speed limits. If their car exceeds the speed limit by 5 mph when they are not on an active call, they should be fined.

They also say they never forget. They actually like having it on for the most part. It protects them if there is a complaint filed. The only thing they don't like is that they can get in trouble for cursing. And apparently in some parts of NOLA, if you don't curse you simply can't get your point across.

My response was to spidermanTUba,PhD's assertion that a cop could just "turn off"his camera whenever he was about to beat the shite out of somebody. Obviously, that wouldn't exactly work to the cops advantage.

At any rate,it would be hard for me to buy the "I forgot to turn my camera on" excuse.
Would they forget to tell dispatch what they're responding to? Forget to turn their lights on? Forget to issue a citation? Nah. They'd just have to get used to doing it like any other part of their job.

Aside from cost, there would literally be no down side. Although now that I think about it, personal camera equipment seems like a much better investment for police departments than MRAPs, body armor and grenade launchers.

This seems like a reasonable area for the feds to provide grants. Prioritize it so that the areas in most need (high racial strife, low trust in police) get the funds first.

Believe me you would want the Chiefs wearing them too. Since Mayors appoint chiefs guess what? Give them cameras too. I would wear the hell out a camera.
