Things you should have known but didn't (re: fishing/hunting)

In 2003 I moved to the 'dell. My subdivision sits on the Honey Island Swamp, and there is a public launch into the Pearl River about 30 seconds from my front door. Based on that, I bought a 16' flat. I though I needed something small enough to maneuver through the Cypress swamp to look for snakes and gators, and I figured I could learn how to catch sac au lait. My error: I HAD NO IDEA that a 25 minute run down the West Pearl would drop me right in the Rigolets right where it hits Lake Borgne. For at least a year, any time I wanted to chase reds I hauled my boat to my dad"s place on the Jourdan and ran to Bay St. Louis. Turned out okay since that little flat was a redfishing machine, but obviously it would have greatly influenced the type of boat I bought if I had known the Rigolets, Lake Borgne, Lake Catherine, and even Lake Pontchartrain were right at my fingertips.
ETA - Literally I just went "exploring" one day and the revelation was like, "WTfrickingF - I'm sitting in the Rigolets right now and looking at Lake Borgne."

PFD in a pirogue? How come duck hunters don't have one?

That scope mounted rifles shoot high at like 20 yds. Missed a damn buck 4 TIMES! He was a suicidal buck. I just couldn't deliver. He looked at me and just walked away. I was young then.

Current not always same as wind direction. Scrubbed my boat against the rig trying to attach hook.

You meant "shoots low at 20 yards" ?

I'll read articles and study fishing patterns, what they're eating, how deep they should be, etc... Forget everything when I get on the water.
ETA: It's always a "wish I would've known that while I was fishing" after I go back and read it again.

You can sight in to be dead on at 100yds, by being 2.5-3" low at 20yds

Didn't know for years that the commonly sold boat plugs with the locking handle on them can also screw down to adjust the width of the rubber part. Always had my gas can holding in the plug bc I thought my boat had an oversize plug hole. Almost sank it once because the gas can bounced up and let the plug out.
Also, I didn't know about tuning your bow for a long time.
Also, it took me years of bow hunting before I figured out to get the bow in position as soon as you hear the deer instead of freezing right then and then having to shift everything when it's within shooting range.
I could write a book on this shite. A lot of my hunting/fishing has been self taught so I've had way more than my fair share of dumbassery in the process. Not that that excuses me.

My buddies old boat had a shite load of silicon around and in his drain hole. I asked what that was about and he said his plug had shrunk by drying out in the sun and no longer fit.
It blew his mind when I tightened the nut by hand and it fit snug in the hole. This guy was from Arkansas, so he had an excuse. I don't know about you guys...

That the island (public land) in the river 3 miles from my house was loaded with turkeys. Didnt even bother to look last year. I was happy but a litle pissed at myself when I went this year and was working gooblers each morning....
