That is a crazy son of a bitch

Driving down i20 and my brother is in front of me. He cleared the front of my brothers truck by maybe 5 yds. Had my brother been going 78 vs 75 he wouldve hit him.
Its a hell of an art they do. But damn.

The pilots are all crazy. I've seen them fly under power lines. The planes themselves are tanks built for semi-acrobatic maneuvers while carrying lots of weight.

Ive seen em touch off. Go under power lines. Flip. Climb and stall etc.
but never seen one get over interstate and split the gap between a trucker and truck before pulling up.
He had to have been cutting through around 60-70 mph

Change the prop out..they make one hell of a drug smuggling plane. Certain times of the year nobody pays any attention to a crop dusting plane.

I'm friends with several in south Arky. They are crazy. I was shocked to learn how expensive those planes are. 1.6 mil for the last one they bought

even used they are a lot. It's crazy. But they are very well made and made to take high loads and many are actually FAA compliant for Acrobatics.

Though the GOAT acrobat is the P51 Mustang.

I love watching them. We have 3 different pilots that fly our crops and it's really cool when two or sometimes 3 are all flying on us. Definitely an art form to it. Our guys are pretty laid back though.

One of them has another private plane that he takes me up in every now and then. Something about it is pretty exhilarating to me. I'm planning on getting my license during the winter when things get calmed down. I'm pretty pumped about it.

The old pilots are really cool. They've all retired or died now, but there used to be a lot of them that were vets of WW2 or Korea or Vietnam. My dad was apologizing to one once because he was having to dodge a bunch of power lines and the guy responded with "If you think those are tricky, you should've been in Saipan where there were shooting at you." Those guys were awesome.

Probably Greg

There is a guy named Greg in NELA that has been flying near my folks house for years.

You can go anywhere in the USA with my dad and if he sees a crop duster.......he says "there's Greg"

When I was growing up, Grumman AgCats were the most common, with those LOUD radial engines.

Seems every Saturday morning, I'd get blown out of bed by one taking off, we lived out in the country and there was an airstrip right across the highway. At first light, around 6:00am or so, they'd start dusting.

Nowadays I don't notice them as much, they all have much quieter inline engines.

ETA: But I did see a biplane cropduster rolling around the fields near the I-49/Meeker exit a few weeks back. Didn't know they still made biplanes, all the ones I've seen the last 20 years are monoplanes.

You'll see them every now and then, but it's sure rare. I can think of one in service right now.

I assume that the switch to inlines has a lot to do with maintenance and fuel costs, I've heard they are a good bit cheaper in that respect than radials.

Those radials sure sounded awesome.

Back in the summer of '83 I had a summer job at the Waterford 3 nuclear plant construction in Taft. One day we were having lunch on the side of the building next to a cane field.

We were watching a crazy cropduster conducting his business and he was getting a little too close to the guy wires of a radio tower. That kept our interest on the plane.

Well, he clipped it with his portside wings probably 80 feet up. This sent him helicoptering into the ground. I expected an explosion, but none came. It was odd how it happened as it seemed to be in slow motion.

We heard later that the dude survived, his only injury was a broken shoulder. Lucky bastard.
