How do car rental companies stay in business?

Does anybody get the size car they reserve? I reserved a small car for a few days and they gave me a minivan. WTF. One man in front of me reserved a truck because he was huge. Sorry, no truck. One lady had to drive from a different town because the branch close to her didn't have ANY cars to rent her, even though she had reserved one. "They TAKE the reservation, but they don't HOLD the reservation" Would any other business survive doing this??

their game is to almost always give you a better grade of car than you reserve....they end up not having to stock so many cars and you think you put one over on them by getting a bigger car than you paid for....

I always get what I reserve or larger/premium.

Probably one of the jokes on that show I laughed the hardest was Seinfeld at the car rental place. Something about his hand motioning of "taking reservations" did it.

Because people travel, drop their vehicles off at a mechanics shop or get in wrecks.

I use National and have absolutely zero complaints. I did have to drive a minivan ONE trip but that's a rare occasion they've always had good car selection. plus you never stand in line, you walk straight to the car and drive to the exit.

I had a rental from Enterprise for about 2.5 weeks. There was a Limited Avalon sitting in a row of Camrys, and when we went out there, he told me to pick and one of the Camrys there. I of course picked the Avalon, but he didn't know the difference and wrote it up as a base model Camry

I'm President's Circle, so yes, I always get my class of car or an upgrade.

Ditto. Last week in San Francisco, for $30 a day, I got a brand new (3 miles on it) Mercedes GL450.

What company is this? I'm Avis First member and get some real pieces of $hit. I rent from Avis about 40 times per year and would think that I would get better cars.

Hertz- never make the mistake of thinking Avis will give you anything.

That's who we use. Never had any complaints.

With Enterprise, I don't have much luck with the free upgrades.....I usually get what I reserve which I guess isn't really a complaint.
I did once reserve a compact and ended up in a brand new Dodge Charger. It was amusing driving a car with a hood long enough on which to land a small plane. I also got upgraded into a really nice SUV once (GMC Acadia) but I have also gotten stuck with a rattle-trap Dodge Journey before.
I kind of wish they'd run out of mid sized cars more often.

I'm usually in a Tahoe or Grand Cherokee with National Executive Elite status

National Elite here as well. Always have a great selection of cars. No complaints. Driving a loaded Tahoe for the next three days, $35 bucks a day.

Never had issues with Hertz. Hopefully it stays that way.
They've even gone out of their way to help us when they didn't have to.

Sounds to me like you probably used hotwire/expedia/priceline
That has only happened to me when I've used those... I don't use those anymore
