Peche - severely disapointed

I have seen nothing but praise here for a while, so the wife and I finally went and gave it a shot. We both left not wanting to go back. I am curious to see what we are missing. Did we just order the wrong things? This is what we had:
Smoked Tuna Dip
Lamb Skewers
Fish Sticks
Hush Puppies
Seafood Gumbo
Shrim bisque
The Lamb skewers were fantastic. Everything else was very bland. The tuna dip was the most disappointing, since this is what I was most looking forward to. We both agreed that the only thing we could taste was the smoke taste and the spice (which isn't a "taste"). With the sauce there should've been more flavor, but there wasn't. It was extremely bland. Maybe this is due to tuna being over smoked and took away the flavor of the seasoning? The hush puppies were good, but this wasn't something we expected to be knock out or failure: it's just hush puppies. The fish sticks were perfectly fried: batter was crispy and the fish was airy and melted in the mouth; however, there was zero taste to it. Once I put lemon juice and tartar sauce on it, they were decent. I liked the gumbo, but the wife didn't. It was the inverse for the bisque.
Did we just order wrong? I feel like we are missing something, because everyone here loves the place.
Oh, I almost forgot about the seating. We were put in a booth and forced to share with others. WTF is the deal with this? That was a huge turnoff for us. We wanted a private dinner and wound up chatting away with our neighbors to the left and right of us. Half the place is setup like this. That's really poor design in my opinion.

I was there Saturday night. Ate at the bar. Tuna dip, shrimp toast, fish sticks, hush puppies, wahoo, lemon pie (and more hush puppies) along with a few rounds of local draft for $100. Best hush pups I've had ever. Loved the fact I could try so much without spending a fortune.

Why don't you call them and ask for some free stuff?

I've had all these dishes but rarely order any of these. You missed Peche's strength which is their crudos and raw preperations. IMO

I just want to clarify. You had to share a booth with strangers or you were adjacent to another booth? I've never seen or experience communal seating at Peche.

Not sure I get the joke. Is this a reference to someone on these boards who does such a thing?

Yeah I feel like we missed out on something. We asked the waiter what were the things to try, and those were what he suggested.
We didn't think the food was bad. We just felt it wasn't very good. As much as I don't want to go back, I keep thinking I need to in order to experience what's right about it.

They have it setup as a bench. It's a long bench with 4 small tables on it. Booth may not be the correct term, but it's the most accurate to the feeling. So we were at our own "table," but we were sitting directly next to couples on each side of us. We chatted up with them and had a good time, but it was an odd experience. We wanted a private dinner. Very off-putting.

What you order wasn't the best for the expectations you had for the place. You ordered a bunch of kid dishes IMO.

Did you have reservations?
I've had dinners like this, and while I kinda enjoyed them because everyone was drinking and just having a good time, I can see how if you wanted a private dinner that would be quite annoying

If I'm dropping over $100 on a meal, I'm not sitting on a damn bench next to a bunch of other plebs. I would have asked to wait for a booth or private table.

I'm far from an expert on Peche....only been once. But I wouldn't expect to be blown away by any of the dishes you ordered. Kinda lame ordering, imo.

well then our waiter is a big fan of kids meals

yes. 3 weeks in advance too. that added to my frustration. there were private tables in the place, but they seemed to be for 4 tops. I'm guessing they put 2 tops at the booth/bench. That's stupid though, because res for 2 is 99% of the time looking for privacy. The other 1% are for people looking to order kids meals

This is Peche's weakness.
They have average service. No way they should be suggesting fish sticks, and hush puppies.

The bench/table thing you speak of is a pretty common seating device in restaurants around the world.
You take a wall, make the wall a bench and put tables along the wall. On the other side of the table from the bench is a chair. Sometimes they are close together, if you didnt like that, dont bother eating out in Paris.

yikes
yeah I would have been kinda pissed to be seated at a shared table with reservations...

Its not a shared table. Its a shared bench. He had his own table.

I have never been there and not told to order the whole fish.

well that sucks. when I go someplace new, I almost always ask the server what the specialties are. I want to try the winning dishes, for what else should you judge a restaurant by? I thought "fish sticks" was an odd suggestion, but I figured they were doing something special and giving it a playful name. I was so wrong! All it needed was some "chips" and malt vinegar to be good

I didn't like the smoked tuna dip either, but the rest of the table loved it. My entree, fish of the day, was fantastic.
