Piece of electronics you bought that never really caught on

Back in 01-02 right around the time I graduated from high school bought a Sony Mini Disc player. Thought I was hot shite. The MD player was cool for a time till it crapped out. Mini Disc never caught on and soon after the Ipod came out.

I recently bought an Ouya. It was designed and marketed as a gaming console, which I think was a mistake.
It has the processing power to do full HD video. I bought one for under $100, installed a port of XBMC on it, and it's just awesome for mounting a shared volume on your network and streaming video to your TV. The device itself is quite small. Hell, there may even be some cool games for it, I don't know I've never even played with it.
It comes with a gaming type controller, but XBMC itself has built-in remote capabilities that you can control from your phone.
I had originally bought Roku 3 for this purpose, but I couldn't stand the clunky Plex interface. This Ouya device is exactly what I needed.
It has the processing power to do full HD video. I bought one for under $100, installed a port of XBMC on it, and it's just awesome for mounting a shared volume on your network and streaming video to your TV. The device itself is quite small. Hell, there may even be some cool games for it, I don't know I've never even played with it.

Speaking of the many Sony failures... Here's a gadget most people never knew existed, the Sony Mylo:
I didn't actually buy it, but it was given to me to review back in '06 when I was a writer for a digital media industry analysis newsletter. Retailed for $349. It was the pre-iPod Touch solution for mobile media, and it was fricking awful.
It had like 1GB of internal storage, expandable with Sony's proprietary Memory Stick Pro cards.
- 2.4" TFT 320×240 pixel screen
- 802.11b Wi-Fi (802.11g had been pretty standard for years, and N was in draft stage)
Included Apps (and the only apps you could have):
- Whatever Sony video and music player to listen to DRM-up-the-a-hole music
- Skype (voice)
- Google Talk
- Yahoo! Messenger
- Ad Hoc Application so that you could use Wi-Fi to share (i.e. stream) songs to another nearby Mylo (lol).
- Opera Browser - the experience was similar to surfing the web on a flip phone.
This thing was sad even for 2006.

I've forgotten the brand/model, but I had an MP3 player from the same era that I much preferred to the ipods. It was about 2/3rds the price for the same amount of storage and you could straight up drop and drag folders from Windows Explorer onto the player as if it were an external HD.
Also, the 3DO, which was a fine piece of hardware at the time.

I can't really say that people are favoring Roku over Ouya for what you're describing. Roku was never intended to be a network media streaming device- it's why I was so hesitant to spring for one until the 2nd gen came out and my desire to tinker and MAKE it a network box work.
To that end, my 2007 purchase of the D-Link Media Lounge 510 was utter upset. My buddy had just landed a nice job and bought his first home, so he decided to set the electronics in it up like he wanted. Went with 7 in-ceiling speakers and a powered standard woofer. When he was explaining this to me, I offered up a solution to stream my extensive music library from my room to the living room with the entertainment system. The solution was utter failure that never particularly worked very well. The included Nero Media Home server failed to connect to the wireless G device. It wasn't until several years later when I abandoned that software and realized it was UPnP + DLNA compatible that I found use for it.
Which brings me full circle to the Roku network streaming, as this applies to both devices equally well: go for an off-device solution that is controlled remotely and turns the device into a "dumb" receiver. Twonky and "play to" in media player are both excellent ways of doing this. It requires phone/tablet/computer browsing and selection of file for streaming, but has been the best solution for pushing media to a device.
ETA: per my invoice, I spent $199.99 + $9.99 shipping for that box.

HD-DVD Player. I bought it in late 07, at the height of the HD-DVD / BluRay war. HD-DVD lost, and so did I.

Couple years ago I bought a Sony dvd/ surround system, not sure of the exact model, but it's the one with s-air (wired speakers in front and back, but wireless from front to back.) Thought it was a great option compared to completely wireless. I got online a while later and was going to order another surround kit, but the whole line was discontinued.

At the time this was a better device than the iPod Mini, it just didn't have the marketing or hype behind it. But it outperformed the iPod mini in every single category, whether it be battery life or sound quality
