What are your thoughts on Chromebooks?

Thinking about getting a second machine for the wife and kids, as sharing is becoming more and more difficult.
Basically, they need to surf the web (95% of the time) and do homework assignments, but they should be able to accomplish this using google and MSFT web apps and cloud storage.
I've just started my research but sounds like a good cheap solution. What says the tech board?

The guys on Pawn Stars say they aren't real laptops (it was an ad for some other company). Other than that I have never used one......

a tablet does the internet better. Not bad for web-based applications.

I've never used them but I saw Microsoft is coming out with an answer to them.

I love mine. It's great for class (light and fits in my backpack) and at it comes in handy at the house to surf the net or check email when the kids are using the desktop and laptop.

They're a great solution for your needs. I have the Toshiba 13 inch and like it a lot. Tablets are not good for productivity (homework, word processing, etc.)
I would suggest you get one with and Intel processor and not the Samsung Exynos processors.

I picked up an Acer C720 for $150. I think it's great. Intel Haswell chip, 8hr battery life. For those worried about it not being a full computer, the bios can support booting Linux. Choose your favorite flavor and do whatever you want.

I have a 13" Chromebook ($299) and it does exactly what I want it to do. Surf the web, steam movies and cast to HD TV. It's lightweight and the battery lasts a long time. It take some time to using the "google cloud" for everything but overall its fits the spot in between a tablet and a full blown desktop.

I have an HP11 and love the little thing. I have my desktop for heavy lifting, and my chromebook fills in everywhere else. Small, light, decent battery, good screen, and a tight physical design. I throw it in my backpack and go. I bought it back in the winter when my desktop died and I needed a quick computer on a budget. I thought it would be a temporary thing, but I've ended up using it a lot even though my desktop is back up and running.

Install Ubuntu and you have the best of both worlds at a reasonable price. When those crappy Windows machines come out to compete, they'll be SLOW as horsecrap. Chromebooks are fast because there's no heavy operating system to tax the resources. Same with Linux.

my only complaint about the C720 I got is the 2GB ram soldered to the mobo. Wish I could add more.
So if you're looking for a chromebook and want 4GB, buy one with 4GB.

Yeah... I would definitely get one with 4GB or more.
