Anyone have toddlers who have trouble sleeping away from home?

I have twin 2 year olds who are an absolute terror trying to get to sleep when we are away from home. At home they are usually very easy to get to bed, when we go anywhere they are little terrors.
We have a few trips coming up and are nervous about their routine.

I'm a long way from being a toddler, and I have trouble sleeping away from home

I think a lot of people are like this...? Maybe bring something recognizable from home to comfort them?

We bring their stuffed animals they usually sleep with. Not sure what else we can do.

I actually saw someone post elsewhere that Benadryl isn't good for the young uns and can have the reverse effect keeping them up.

We used to put ours in the car and drive around until they fell asleep then carry in and put to bed.

probably so, I'm no doctor....I wouldn't ever do it if I ever had any kids unless they were driving me up a wall.

My twins are 4. They've had trouble when we go on vacation. Everything is new, so they don't want to just go to bed. I brought a fave toy and blanket from home. Turned out the lights and said it was time for bed. Regular routine if possible. Hotel rooms aren't easy. I just went to bed when they did. Hope it works out.

Benadryl isn't "bad" for them, but approximately 1 in 10 has this reverse effect mentioned where the Benadryl will actually act like a stimulant and keep them up. If you want to try this, do it during the day at their nap time.

This is one I finally got mastered.
1) Extra sweets & treats are ok but not after 2:00. Changing a toddlers diet is a big deal.
2) Stay as close to routine as possible. Don't let them stay up later than 30 minutes last their regular bedtime. It throws their cycle out of whack and kids get more exciteable as they get more tired, making it harder for them to fall asleep.
3) Download Relax M.P. app right now. Let them help you find a sound combo they find peaceful and let them start sleeping to it now. My son sleeps to ocean waves, thunderstorm and wind chimes combo. His pick. Putting the phone on the bedside table with the app running blocks out sounds from outside their room.
Yeah. It's a pain in the arse to not be very flexible when you're traveling but you have a toddler now. It's not about you or your parents & friends, it's about them.

this is actually a damn good idea...I travel for work quite a bit and think I may try it for myself....

That app is a life saver in hotels. No more waking up to drunks, elevators or slamming doors.

Mine sleep like angels at the grandparents, but we have a knock down drag out fight EVERY night getting the 2.5 yr old down. He wakes up a couple times a night hollering.

See that's what gets us, ours rarely wake up or cause trouble getting to sleep at home.

I've never had an issue at home. On the road, he is bombarded with new sights and experienced. His brain goes into overdrive. Kids are all about routine. The more you keep the routine the same , the easier it is for them.
