Brand new to the sport but very interested. Is it possible to find a used yak for $200 or less? Doesn't need to be nice. What all do I need to rig the boat with? Any good starter spots around the BR area? Appreciate any advice I can get!

Maybe. Craigslist or BCKFC.

Search for kayak threads on here. There was one recently specifically about kayak rigging.

No one gives away fishing spots in BR. You can always go paddle around the lakes. But for good fishing, head to the coast.

But honestly, once you get the kayak, you just need to sit down and think about what you need to land a fish, store a fish, anchor up, store rods and reels, store ice chest for beverages, store tackle box, etc. It takes time figuring out what suits you best. First step is getting the kayak, though.

I also learned a ton from youtube. Just search for kayak fishing and you'll find plenty of info and tips

All I have bought for my kayak is a paddle. I use a stadium seat to sit on and I do not own and anchor or anything else for it..
While a marsh pole would be nice and I'm going to build one soon, you do not need anything else except for the kayak and the paddle to catch some fish.. I have caught countless limits of redfish without any accessories. Just get the yak and then go out and fish on it and you will find out what best fits your needs

Not a good one. Even if it's used. But hey, you may get lucky.

Yeah, that's a pretty tight budget. I've seen some 10' sit in kayaks for that on Craigslist, but they go super fast.

Every so often you'll come across a cheap, small kayak in the $250-$300 range like 10ft Pelicans, etc but rarely have I ever seen anything much cheaper. If you'd be willing to up your budget to the $400ish range it would put you in a little better position to find something like a used Pescador or older model Ascend FS12T or something similar. You'd have to be patient and look high and low but $200 isn't much to start with.

I say the same thing in every one of these threads.

Call Masseys and see if they have any old demos for sale. You can haggle with them.

But seriously, while possible, it may take a lot of looking? And if you're a big boy, it will be even harder as most kayaks you will find at that price are the 9-10' kayaks that have 200lb weight limits.

I do know that recently Academy put their Heritage 12' Angler kayaks on clearance for $199, so it is possible to find a deal though if you look hard enough.

An alternative to a kayak that may work for you is one of these:

Another option:

There are a number of kayak tournaments coming up with kayaks up for grabs as prizes. Rent a kayak, fish the tournament and you may be able to take one home!

Casting for Kids- July 19th = Hobie Quest up for grabs

LA1 Slamboree- July 26th = Jackson Cuda up for grabs

Ride the Bull- August 16th = Wilderness Ride 135, 115 and 115x, along with a KC kayak up for grabs.

Good luck!

I have an Ascend 10 ft with rod holders and the set up for cartop carriers I'll part with for $300.

Would also consider trade for certain firearms, either pistols or 22 17 semis.

Well there ya go.

FWIW, if anyone ever wants to get their feet wet, Ive got a tandem that fishes well. Im a terrible guide and about the only thing Im great at is tying wind knots... but the offer is out there.

$200 is going to be cheap. I am into stand up kayak fishing myself. It is taking off and there's starting to be more of these kayaks to choose from. Here's one of the better ones IMO. LINK
