spinoff thread: how often do you throw out game/fish from your freezer?

me personally, i used to throw out shite every year. mainly because i would throw a million filets in a gallon bag and then fill it with water. took too damned long to thaw out so i would never cook it. after a year i'd chuck it in the trash. since i started vacuum sealing i almost never throw anything out, although i have to make an effort to eat some things when the woman isn't around (squirrels).

Never unless something looks wrong with it.

Never
Cook and eat all that shite or give it away.

yep.
Otherwise I don't throw out game. I do give a lot of it away though.

Never really. I did throw a rabbit that punctured a bag the other day. Also threw some frog backs away because I didn't feel like nawing on them

I can't remember ever doing this. Once I see that I have a lot that is relatively old, I have a huge fish fry. My friends certainly enjoy that

The only time I threw away frozen food was when the power went out after a storm.
After a couple months of not eating much venison, I'm starting to cook it again to make room in the freezer.
When I take people fishing I usually give them most of the fish and keep enough for a couple meals during the week.
Gallon bags of filets - I only keep a couple of these in case we have company. Otherwise I freeze enough for two in each bag.

do any of you have a system for putting them away. like 6 speck fillets is perfect for two people. or half a quart bag is good for 4 people etc.

I once threw out some bait shrimp because it was left out and got rotten. But that's it.

vac sealer has made that a thing of the past, all the tuna and deer in my freezer has been ett
the only exception is I'll end up using amberjack as chum because after a few months it gets strong as hell

When I do freeze fish, I usually do one layer in a quart sized ziploc. By that I mean when you lay the bag flat, it has one layer, about 3/4" thick. Put in water, but squeeze out as much as I can. Leave just enough to cover the fish. Then I lay it flat in the freezer. That way when I pull it out, it defrosts faster. It's usually enough for two or three people. I do the same with shrimp and when I buy bulk chicken and stuff. Take it out, put it in a bowl of room temperature water and it usuall defrosts in about 45ish minutes. If you just fill up a bag, it's just a huge block of ice after that no one wants to wait for to defrost.

I cooked some tuna last night that I caught in June 2012. Tasted great.

I give a lot away to people I like, or people I need to like me. I gave a client 5lbs of de-boned turtle meat last week. I have a guy coming to paint my house next week. He originally quoted me $20/hr. I then told him that was too high, but if he was willing to barter I'd throw in a couple deer roasts, backstrap, deer sausage, and about 3 gallons of catfish. He's painting for $12/hr now

Thinking of freezer, I'm thaw out some back strap to make a Cajun Po boy tonight.
Take your backstrap, butterfly and roll it out until it's flat; line it with bacon, season, stuff with a Meat stuffing, add a stick or so of smoke sausage, roll it back up, wrap it in bacon, jet net, smoke & cook for 6 hours
