Margarita Recipe

I'm looking for a simple margarita recipe (no store bought mixes). I found one that called for 2 oz patron, 1/2 oz grand manier, a splash of sour mix, and a half of squeezed lime. I bought all ingredients listed above but could not find the sour mix. I bought something in a small bottle called orange bitters. I "tested" one last night and it wasn't drinkable. It was way to sour. I like my margaritas to be a little sour but a little sweet at the same time. Anyone have any good recipes and May can tell me where I went wrong on the above recipe?

Where would I find agave nectar? I didn't see that at a couple grocery stores I went to. Thanks

You weren't looking very well.

I think it's next to the honey.

Agave is either in the baking section or with the bar mixers.
If you don't see it, ask an employee. Every store carries it.
And scratch the sour mix from your recipe.

This. Alternatively if you don't wanna splurge for Grand Marnier, Gran Gala is a cheaper substitute and in a mixed drink with lime juice/tequila in it, you won't notice the difference anyway.

^^That^^
You can adjust the sweet/tart balance with the ratio of lime juice to agave, but my $0.02 on that is for every part of lime juice, use half of that or a bit less of the agave. And only freshly-squeezed lime juice!!! That stuff out of the plastic bottle is useless in drinks!

My favorite is 2oz tequila, 2oz lime juice, 1oz simple syrup, 1 oz cointreau.

Make sour mix:
Ingredients
1 cup sugar
1 cup water
1 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
1/2 cup freshly squeezed lime juice
Procedures
1
Make simple syrup by bringing the sugar and water to a boil, about 7 minutes. Stir to dissolve sugar. Remove from heat and let cool.
2
While the syrup is cooling, strain freshly squeezed lemon and lime juice into a resealable bottle, discarding the pulp. Pour in the cooled simple syrup. Shake and use immediately or refrigerate.
1.5oz Resposado Tequila
.5oz Grand Marnier
Homemade Sour Mix
I think these are pretty solid.

I'm no tequila connoisseur by any means but can you guys really tell the difference in taste between a margarita made with reposado vs blanco ( a decent one like Espolon, El jimador or Dos Lunas). Planned on picking up a bottle of something for the beach this afternoon.

Taken from Yahoo Answers:
Also, make sure you get 100% agave.
ETA: To answer your question, yes it's a better flavor when taken straight. There is an after taste in margaritas IMO if they are made with poor tequila but anything 100% is probably fine.
quote:
Blanco (sometimes called silver) - no aging
Reposado (sometimes called gold) - minimally aged at least 2 months, but can be up to 1 year
Anejo - heavily aged, minimally 1 year but less than 3 years.
Some really expensive ones can even be aged longer than that, and are often referred to as Ultra-Anejos. Those can be aged for up to 5 years.
Generally speaking, the longer it's aged, the darker in color (as it picks up more color from the wooden barrels) and the smoother the taste, and the higher the cost.

Try this ratio out as well:
2 oz fresh squeezed lime juice
1.5 oz reposado tequila
1.5 oz agave nectar
Another that works well is:
1.5 oz reposado tequila
1.5 oz fresh squeezed lime juice
1.5 oz agave nectar
0.5 oz Grand Marnier
For the tequila, I usually use Hornitos or Corazon.
Either of above into an ice filled shaker. Shake and strain into martini or margarita glass. Rim salt optional.

That sounds like too much and would make it entirely too sweet.
That's three tablespoons worth.

Not a true Margarita without egg whites.

If you're serving more than a few, but do you really add egg white to a single serving of a marg?
