They're all closing, from what I've heard.

Any word on if it's because that property might be being redeveloped and they're getting the boot? I know Catholic owns it and has been trying to get money to expand and also develop commercial opportunities.

They filed bankruptcy a few years ago. Piccadilly is an organization in shambles and is a shell of its former self.

Ok, I couldn't figure out where a Piccadilly on Government was, so I GoogleMapped it, and still can' figure it out. Even with street view on I know the area. I just moved from there. But I don't remember seeing a Piccadilly.

The one on Essen is disgusting. Not sure why that one is still operating.

Back in my grandma's time -- and I'm on the other side of 50 from most of the posters here -- the Westmoreland Shopping Center (Plaza?) was quite the center of commerce.

And on Sundays the Piccadilly had lines out the door out to the street. Deserts that used to be at the front of the serving line (evil genius marketing), giant slabs of beef from which the "roast beast" was carved, and real-glass glasses full of either iced tea with 2" of sugar dumped in it (I can still hear the "clink clink clink" of the tea being stirred all over the room), or your choice of spotlight-illuminated "pink drink" or "red drink" for wide-eyed Mississippi kids like me who had never seed nuthing like that before.

Plus the magic conveyor belt where the dirty serving trays disappeared into a hole. Oh, did I mention that servers used to take your tray to the table and dispense the plates of food?

It. Was. Magic.

Think I'll be there in the next few days to drop a large honorarium in Henry Gray's tip jar? Count on it.

South side of Government just west of Acadian Throughway. Don't miss this real part of Baton Rouge's history. And please tip Mr. Gray -- he is Mr. Baton Rouge.

I remember going there when DH Holmes, Young Fashions, Tic Toc Shoes, and Cohn Turner were all in that shopping center. Up until I was 24 years old or so, I probably are there more than any place else. I'm sad.

I remember being at that Piccadilly the day Jack Ruby shot Lee Harvey Oswald. We used to go there on Sundays after mass @ Sacred Heart.

Sorry to hear this, the last of the old Piccadillys.
I stopped in there a few months ago.
Glad I did.

Food wasn't great but Henry Gray on piano was worth it.

The guy has played or recorded with Elmore James, Buddy Guy, the Stones, Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf.
I'd love to catch him there one more time.

Is there some way I can have the above quote framed?

There was a time, when dinosaurs roamed the earth, that I loved Picadilly. In fact, I considered it a treat in law school.

I never loved Picadilly, but I did hate it at one point. My folks dragged me there against my wishes as a child. Ironically, I grew to appreciate it some, but that was after college. I never made it to a BR Picc.

Now it's too inconvenient to go but I wouldn't object.

What? I've got to imagine it's a true statement for a pretty large percentage of Baton Rougeons born any time before like 1980 or so.

Another place I went once in 2000 or so.
Got fish. It was a roach nest then.

DrT you brought back a lot of memories. And very person got their own receipt at the end of the serving line stuck to the sweaty water, tea or pink drink glass. That was a rare treat on the occasion my parents would take us out to eat, especially on Sunday. I think half our church service would be in there.
