Would that be comparable to Miracle on Ice if they would take down Belgium and Argentina.

If they took down Argentina, I'd have to say it's close.

I know people will disagree since it only means we made the final 4, but ice hockey is played by 8 or 9 countries. Soccer is played by 150+.

Take down both in back to back games? Yeah. But one team on it's own. I don't think so.

Belgium hasn't looked spectacular and Argentina has been averge outside of Messi obviously.

No, we'd obviously be underdogs, but both of those teams have their issues.

Wait, I thought Argentina and Belgium sucked according to the SB? Now they are the Soviet Union at the height of the Cold War?

No.

Just because Argentina hasnt dominated like the USSR did. The USSR won the gold in the Olympics 6 out of the 7 previous olympics. Which is just ridiculous. They were considered to be unbeatable.

Beating a good team isnt the same thing as taking down a dynasty with amateur players.

Not even close. All other factors aside, it would not be shocking to me if the USA beat both those teams. Neither Argentina nor Belgium has looked very impressive in this World Cup IMO.

I wouldn't be surprised at all. Honestly.

Only way they could possibly be compared to Miracle on Ice if they win World Cup by beating Belgium-Argentina-Netherlands-Germany/Brazil. Thats how crazy the Miracle on Ice was.

Yeah neither Argentina nor Belgium are as unstoppable as the Soviet Union was in those days. Good teams, yes, but not unbeatable. Will take excellent performances from us to have a chance. It's not like we've looked better than each team. We've had our own fair share of struggles.

They could have played the Miracle On Ice game 100 times and, literally, the US might have only defeated the USSR once. That's not the case with Argentina and especially not Belgium.

I have to say that the US is a dangerous enough team that my answer is not even close. Germany was playing more rested and we had a good chance to level and they have the 2nd best odds in the tournament.

All of this plus all of the huge political elements at the time.

It would be like if Argentina was the second largest military and world power, had a soccer team that was considered unbeatable and hadn't lost in ~8 years, it was widely patriotic to be anti-Argentinian, amd you beat them in America with a group of college soccer players.

The miracle on ice was the greatest moment In USA sports history. This world cup has been great but things need to be kept in perspective.

Our game against Belgium is on Tuesday 7/1, and if we advance to the quarterfinals, that will be played the next Saturday, 7/5.
