Supply and demand
Yeah but supply is low for a reason. I assume that reason is big brother.

Yep.
R-22 kills the environment (or so they say) so they forced a changed to 410, even though they have come out with a harmless R-22 replacement.

I think newer systems have switched to a new formula of Freon. The old formula is being phased out and they won't be making more of it.

Absolutely - people that have been wrong for decades.

They haven't made it since 1995.
I have 10 pounds of it though I haven't used in years.
How much do you need?

CFCs are pretty fricked up and not needed when 134a, 410 and others are just as goof.

I don't pay for it.
A side business of appliance repair, is appliance recovery.
When I get a post 1995 fridge I just cut the compressor out. The 3.4 ounces of 134a aren't worth it to me and are under the amount noted as a "discharge" so no harm in leaking that little. (16 ounces of 134a is like $12)
But when I have to cut the compressor out of a pre-1995 fridge I get 3-5 ounces of Freon (r12) that is worth $50-75 an ounce.
But the ONLY time I ever get to sell r12 is when a customer in an area untouched by Katrina has a subzero or something that needs charging.
Most sealed r12 fridges never leak and never need service. Many think they were/are superior o the Tetrafluoroethane we use now.
I turn in my full recovery tank and get a full fill tank of R12.
I never had to buy it, but I have a supplier.
Most of it comes from Florida.
Those bastards sweeps in and took all the freon from the fridges damaged in Katrina.
It's why it is more expensive in NOLA than almost anywhere else (besides green cities) because 95% of all metro area fridges were replaced in 2005/2006.

Freon is expensive because they haven't made it in years. The supply for freon is coming from a limited stockpile. However, refrigerant on the other hand, I don't know...
