NOPD won't hire someone that doesn't live in the city

but
"Now, New Orleans police are too in order to stay competitive for the best recruits."
by removing the restrictions that formerly "Until now, telling a New Orleans police recruiter that you've used drugs like crack cocaine, heroin or LSD would have landed you anything but a city paycheck. But a new rule approved by the city's Civil Service Commission allows former drug users to be considered for a job under certain stipulations."
No doubt our mayor is interested in finding the "best" police recruits. LINK

Columbus PD allows people one year removed from marijuana smoking and 3 years removed from Cocaine use to join the force.
I see no problem with it.

I think this is good. I don't think admitting prior use should automatically disqualify someone.
A lot will probably make better cops than those who haven't seen/been around any drugs before they start.

You are entitled to your opinion, but the main point I was trying to make is it is absurd to not recruit someone because they live in Metairie or Slidell then take former drug users and claim you are trying to find the best applicants available.
And don't bitch about the crap you get on the police force when you scrape the bottom of the barrel for diversity.

Some of your best narcs are former dopeheads.

This I totally agree with. It doesn't make sense to limit your hiring pool. It seems like a political stance to take on something that shouldn't be politicized.
I somewhat understand wanting to have officers that would take ownership of the city and pride in it because they live there, but I think that shouldn't be an issue for any professional in the work place. All people should take pride in their work environment.

Just wondering?
How many narcs do you know?
The narcs I know don't trust former dope heads turned cops further than they can throw them.

By a 6 to 1 vote that rule was abolished by the new City Council
quote:
NEW ORLEANS - The New Orleans City Council has thrown out the rule requiring all city police officers, fire fighters and EMS personnel to live in Orleans Parish.
Recruitment and retention within the New Orleans Police Department is at an all-time low, but now city officials hope to turn things around by eliminating at least one major deterrent, the domicile rule.
Thursday, the city council voted 6 to 1, to lift the residency requirement so that New Orleans police officers, firefighters and EMS workers can live where ever they want.

GOOD.
The NOPD has been a shite show for so long in part *because* of the residency requirement.
The politics and racial aspect come into play too, when it comes to getting thoroughly unqualified people into the uniform. Like, say, Antoinette Frank.

About how I feel about cops in general

Thank goodness. That rule was just stupid.

I came to post that domicile is waived, but another poster did this. Did you even look into this before you came and posted?

My first reaction was "good for them" for being liberal on this.
Upon giving it some thought, I now say frick that. If they're going to forgive enforcers of these laws in the name of common sense, then why enforce the laws at all?

The problems with NOPD recruiting go way deeper than waiving the residency requirement and allowing prior drug use.

If these narcs are telling you they've never used before, don't believe them.
