Congrats. I got my CCNA in april of last year so I still have a little time before I need to get the NP. Just moved up to network admin a few months ago

Thanks all.

I will say that what I've learned in CCNP training just crushes CCNA level material. It should, of course, but it's exponentially more encompassing.

Wish me luck on TSHOOT, I have it scheduled in less than 2 weeks. But I much prefer CLI/Troubleshooting than multiple choice questions.

Any personal advice from someone that has taken TSHOOT recently?

I took the TSHOOT exam about 1 week after my ROUTE. I found it to be the easiest of the 3 exams.

How does all this work? Is it an online course with a test at the end or do you just study recommended material then take a test?

And what is the title or position you're aiming for by getting these certifications?

Not an online course. There are classes and study material available and the test are usually taken at a Pearson VUE testing facility.

These are Cisco networking certifications, so generally you'd be aiming for some Network Admin/Network Engineer type position.

This link has some additional info on Cisco certifications: Cert Info

You can either take classes or do self-study. Self-study involves buying a book or books to read up on, and finding either a couple of cheap switches and a router on eBay, or using GNS3 to emulate them. Then you just read, read, practice, practice, etc.

CCNA test was pretty tough, so I can only imagine what the CCNP will be. Lucky for me, I work at an ISP and we have old equipment laying around that I can scrounge up to make a lab.

I got my CCNA while I was in afghan and no way will I be proceeding any further than that on this track. I just don't use it enough and it's just too tough for me.

This is spot-on. I'm doing self study. GNS3 is really good, not even just studying, but to test designs, etc. I have two 3550 switches from ebay, just like you said.

Congrats on the CCNA. It really just depends on what you do - and what you want to do.

I'm already an IT veteran, jack of all trades. I do network consulting as it is. I just want to push it as far as I can go. CCIE is the goal, but that's in the distant future.

I'm an Infrastructure Systems Engineer. I deal with storage and VMware servers etc. I have to occasionally configure a switch.

Was my goal as well for a time, then I realized VERY few companies in Louisiana can afford CCIE money.

I think I'm better off going NP R/S then NA Voice, NA Wireless, etc.

Currently working on my NP Wireless(1 of 4 test passed). For a long time I had no intentions of even making an attempt at the CCIE, but I'm fairly certain I'm going to give it a go once I'm done with the NP Wireless. With a bit of review I could probably pass the written with little trouble, but that lab.... You've got to be willing to dedicate a year or two of your time and potentially thousands of your own dollars.

I read that the average CCIE spent 2 years and 10G preparing.....

I can easily believe that.

Depending on your current salary, location, and other factors, you need to look at the ROI for that. It isn't worth it for everyone. For me, it is becoming more of a personal goal. It wouldn't garner me much, if any, of a pay increase, but it would give me some added job security.
