I have cable with no dish so I will need a cable box outside. any other options without switching to dish for being able to have access to all the channles on the patio?

you could run a splitter off of an existing box, but both TV's would have to be on the same channel
add an RF remote to the setup and you can change the channel easily from outside

that's what I thought. I really want to have the TVs independent of each other. Will the HD cable boxes hold up outdoors in the heat and cold? It will be under a covered area but still open to heat/cold.

I'm curious about this as well. I have one of those small genies with DirecTV I want to put out there. I'm thinking I may just try and cover it somehow...I have to think rust and moisture would get to it. Not directly but especially with how humid it is

yeah I would like to understand the optimal set up before we start construction in a couple weeks. I wouldn't mind some type of surround out there but don't want a giant receiver just sitting out in the elements getting roasted.

Can always go the IR Emitter route and keep the box inside.

With no other devices being connected to the tv I think this is the way to go.
Another thing to consider is building a weatherproof cabinet to house the tv/receiver/cable box when not in use.

Yep, put the equipment inside or build a cabinet
If the TV can handle the elements though, I'm sure the cable box could

thanks. how does the emitter work?

It's just an IR receiver that repeats the IR signal inside the cabinet with your equipment to make it seem like your remote has line of sight to the equipment.
RF remotes and receivers are a better option IMO
eta: i actually bought this goofy looking contraption and it works very well

The cable box does not have to be outside. Just run the proper cable to the location behind the TV. Get an RF remote setup and you have what you desire. RF is a better solution than an IR repeater.
Just run a stereo pair of speakers out there if you want external sound. Surround sound doesn't really work well without walls to structure the sound field. None of the equipment needs to be outside.

This. I have an extra cable box just for outside tv but it is inside with my other box. I ran a long hdmi from monoprice to outside with an hdmi wall plate. My harmony remote also allows iphone control so when I'm outside I turn it all on with my phone.

That RF emitter is amazing.

so where I'm mounting the tv is a brick wall. on the other side of the brick wall is my master bedroom. could I use this wall plate thing to put the cable box on the inside of the brick wall in my bedroom and the remote will still work from the outside shooting it through the brick wall?

Dude look up my brick outdoor TV project on here. It's easy but in hindsight I wouldn't have bothered running hdmi since the Chromecast does virtually everything I want.
Keep it simple. Download the dish TV app for your phone and use that as a remote. Done.

RF is radio frequency. As long as the distance isn't too far the brick wall should not be an issue. The phone app is also a great suggestion.

This is what I use... Just bring it outside and hook it up. Pretty simple.
