Have any of you ever experienced "depersonalization"?

Depersonalization (or depersonalisation) is an anomaly of self-awareness. It consists of a feeling of watching oneself act, while having no control over a situation.[1] Subjects feel they have changed, and the world has become vague, dreamlike, less real, or lacking in significance. It can be a disturbing experience, since many feel that, indeed, they are living in a "dream".
Pretty sure I had a mild bout with this yesterday and it scared the fricking shite out of me. Any of you ever experienced this?

Sounds like a defense lawyer's wet dream.
"Your Honor, my client can't have possibly committed the crimes he is accused of, you see, he is depersonalized."

Mushrooms, lsd, and marijuana all cause this. Many people aim for it, but to others it's terrifying. Depression can cause depersonalization as well.
Also, ego death is the most extreme form of depersonalization, and is the most humbling thing one can go through. Ego death can be achieved by smoking dmt, salvia, or eating large amounts of mushrooms. It's not exactly "pleasant" but it's something that you can learn a lot from.

I have not experienced it, but a friend of mine completely quit drinking after this happened to him one night...said it scared the shite out of him and he had no plans for it to happen again...
I don't think he has touched another drop of alcohol since that night....

Sounds like a really weird panic attack.

How long did this "bout" last? What triggered it?
Posted on 6/15/14 at 7:47 pm to TigersSEC2010
I had a couple things in my past that triggered me into this state. It's freaky as shite. Did something trigger you? Like did you get upset or did something happen? I was pushed there and just figured it was a coping mechanism.

Some people with severe anxiety disorders experience it as a way for the body to combat their fears....awful shite.

Had a panic attack after smoking weed in HS that triggered it. I kid you not, the worst experience of my life. Haven't touched marijuana since.

I am the person to talk to for this. I got derealization (type of disassociative disorder in the same class as depersonalization) when I was 19 and a sophomore in college. It felt like a cloud/bubble in my head that I could not pop. I was disconnected from reality chronically, not just for a 15 minute bout or anything. This lasted for almost a year, until, after many bouts of medication and other types of therapy, finally got treated with Clonazepam. That was the worst year of my life, as I felt like I was just living through the motions.
In general, I have a high level of stress and anxiety. What triggered the derealization was a night of drunkenness followed by trying weed for the first time via a vaporizer. I had panic attack after panic attack for the next few days, and the physicians I spoke to all believed that my body's natural coping mechanism to deal with the stress was to distance my brain from emotion.

Without getting into too much detail, I basically found out that someone I had always seen as a model father and good guy was truly just a worthless piece of shite. There's more that I'm not getting into, but it shocked me and I still feel like it's a dream.
It lasted a few hours. Probably around 4 hours, honestly. It started during lunch and so I went back to my room to sleep, and when I woke up about two hours later it was mostly gone, and by the time I went to sleep that night it was completely gone. At one point I felt as if I could literally feel the life coming back into my body as I went from feeling weak to warm and tingly again.
It was the freakiest shite ever and I hope to never experience it again.
