There are better hardware options and better VoIP providers than Magic Jack. I have U-Verse and dropped ATT phone service almost a year ago. I use an Obi-Hai phone gateway connecting to Callcentric, which offers features that run rings around ATT and Cox Cable phone service at a fraction of the cost.

All I know is I've been getting mother fricking solicitors calling from magic jack numbers a few times a day and I'm about to shake a baby

I use magic jack and have been getting a lot of scam calls. I didn't really consider it to be a result of having magic jack, but maybe it is.

Magic Jack is pretty dirt cheap for the hardware and subscription. No issues with it personally, but I just use it for conference calls when I work from home.

Why do you need a land line?

I used to get half a dozen calls a day like that. I can honestly say that I can't remember the last one I got. Probably six months ago. Callcentric has features that let you block virtually all of the spam.

BTW, I ported my original land line number so the reduction in spam wasn't due to having a new number.

I love my **free** Google Voice. You can get 337/985/504 numbers. Dial from your cell phone (with app) and forward to cell phone. You can also send/receives texts from a browser. Voice mail too with transcriptions emailed to you.

I have a MJ with uverse. I use it for small home-office phone. Its fine 85-90% of time. Then I have a few calls per day where I can barely hear the other party its so low... thats my only complaint. (ps I have one of the original versions of MJ not the MJ Plus so that may have been improved).

IM also curious of any other cheap VOIP suggestions people might have. Its time to renew my MJ and I started looking around.

For us lazy peoples, can you use google voice for a stand alone home/ home-office phone? Just plug a phone into your pc?

That's exactly what I use it for. I use it in my browser. Nothing elaborate; no multiple lines, etc but it functions well. I have a PC microphone and a pair of cheap desktop speakers (**my laptop has issues with echos; speakers are too close to the on-board mic; separate speakers should fix that**). I also use it on my iPad and iPhone (apps) - works beautifully with both. When you dial from your cell or desktop, the receiving party sees you Google number on their caller id - not your cell number. Voice quality is excellent - people think you're on a land-line.

You can get 1 Google Voice number for each Google account you have, but you can only use your cell phone with 1 Google Voice number. Can't have multiple GV numbers going to 1 cell phone.

There is a call block feature and spam feature that takes care of those. Spam feature works well (low interest credit cards; vacation trips, etc).

There will be critics, but remind them that it's **free**.

I'm certainly no CPA, but when compiling your expenses for "telephone", you would simply enter "$0.00".

I mean for a dedicated office phone.

I don't understand the reference to "...tax purposes". I use GV for my main business (LLC) phone. for my purposes, it works well. And again, it's free.

you can get better numbers than that. I had a new jersey number where the last 6 digits were my last name, but I gave it up because I never used GVoice

You can do the same for most area codes. However, most "vanity numbers" like 0000, 2222, 3333, etc or popular words spelled out have already been taken. However, last names or company/product names(depending on uniqueness) may be a play.

I believe you have to have a dedicated phone line for business purposes to claim a space in the house for home office for tax purposes.

Fwiw, I just tried to sign up and there are no NY or NJ numbers left, nor are there 504 or 337 either.
