Looks like I will be getting into the computer gaming world. What are some good gaming laptops out there? I was looking at a Lenovo ideapad y510. Never did online gaming before so I am not sure if I need a lot of RAM space or a fast processor. Any help would be appreciated.

Neither are nearly as important as a capable GPU. I can help you, but before we even get into this, what is your budget? If it's not realistic, you are not going to be happy with the 'gaming' experience of a laptop.

I assume you want the laptop because you travel a lot. Otherwise, you're throwing your money away on an underpowered machine.

I am thinking anywhere from 1000-1500. Yes, I would like to bring it with me when I travel.

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

that's my gaming laptop and I can play any game on optimal settings with no issues.

There was a brief discussion of gaming laptops in this price range in the PC thread (page 847), and this $1399 MSI laptop was linked: LINK

It has the best GPU for the price range, and that's what you need to pay the most attention to, with all else being secondary. RAM is unimportant as long as there is at least 8GB (and that's pretty standard in gaming laptops). There is a 15" version of that same laptop for the same price as well.

If you want to go cheap, 860M GPU minimum if you want any real longevity out of the machine.

Avoid the Lenovos with SLI, but this one seems OK for the price: LINK

If you get a gaming laptop, get something to alleviate the heat your legs will be subjected to.

That's a flat out lie unless you consider optimal settings medium or high (on older games) with lots of textures turned down.

What would you recommend for a $3000 budget? I was thinking Alienware, but I have no idea if those are worth the price.

If you are paying $3K, you have better be paying for some type of SLi/CFx config w/ a GTX 870/880M or 290M.

Jesus, I just can't imagine dropping $3k on something that will perform at a fraction of the desktop equivalent budget and be practically impossible to upgrade effectively.

But, I suppose if my income allowed for it, I'd be buying toys like that all the time.

At that price point, there may be some specialty smaller shops that do custom laptops with their own branding, but I'd have no clue on their quality. You can for sure get some ASUS and MSI laptops customized up to that $3k mark, but it'll mostly involve upgrades to the CPU, some mSata SSDs tacked on, excessive RAM, etc. Nothing that will go beyond a single 880M most likely.

Yeah same...

The only way is if I was traveling a lot or working out of town for 1-2months.

Thanks.

Yeah, I travel weekly and need a laptop that can feed duel monitors when I'm in my 2nd office or home offce. I need to be more portable than a desktop.

Do you have any links where I might order what you are recommending?

Well any laptop with an IB or HW iGPU HD4000 or greater could run dual monitors in work applications without hiccup.

If you are serious about gaming I would strongly consider the laptops LSU linked. You will want to suck it up and purchase nobless than a GTX 860 in the system.
