to discuss giving me a promotion due to the increase work load I've been carrying over the past 18....long story short, he agreed to make a commitment to go to HR and make a case to have me promoted.

He told me that he has no control over whether or not that will happen nor does he have any control to how much my salary will increase.

I've been working my arse off for these past 18 months. My question to the board is what do I do if I don't agree with the salary increase handed out by HR. I have a number in my head that I feel is fair compensation for the work I'm doing, but what do I do if they lowball me on that number? Do I then go to HR and have a similar type meeting with them that I did with my manager laying out everything I've been doing?? Will that even make a difference?

I've always worked for women. They always worked to get you fired, no matter what the job or performance.

Consider yourself lucky.

Women in workplace hate men in the workplace.

Are you willing to walk away over it?

(If not, then, "No, it won't make a difference.")

If you make yourself irreplaceable you make yourself unpromotable.

Many people fail to realize this.

If he said this:

quote:

to go to HR

Chances are good that he has no stroke and that neither the raise or promotion are gonna happen.

Dust off the old resume' and get ready...

you can try to protest, but it probably wont do any good. If you really think it's unfair, go get another job

You can't be serious.

If I had to guess, I'd say probably upwards of 80 or 90% of people in teh workforce don't have the balls/nerve/interest in going to their boss and asking for a raise. So in this scenario you would actually get a raise, more money than you've been making, and try to go back and ask for more?

How about just be greatful that they're giving you a raise at all?

This may get more serious responses on the money board

If you don't like the decision you need to meet with the decision maker, whoever that is. If they don't give you the money you want you can stay or leave but that's something you need to decide for yourself.

Find a new job if they don't want to reason with you. There's no reason to stick around if you feel like you're being underpaid and unappreciated.

I would say if you are unsatisfied, then start spending time at work doing another job, making up the difference.

IMO, in a majority of circumstances, if you have to fight hard for a promotion, you're not going to be happy for long.

I don't mean working hard to get noticed or ahead, I mean actually pull administrative strings to get it done. Obviously it varies by industry, but if you're in a healthy company with solid management and you're valuable, they'll let you know.

If you're not in a healthy company or don't have solid management, it probably isn't going to make you feel much better to get a little more money.

No, he has no control over that from what he tells me. He said there's someone in HR who directly handles salary issues.

My section head is a woman, and she's always gone to bat for me. Maybe it has more to do with you than her.

You are a fairly young guy, right?
