Even business owners work for other people.

One of the old profit schemes for our company is, whenever someone gets fired or quits, the owned pays the next person a good bit less than the previous person, or doesn't fill the position.. It's great for morale. In a year and a half, we've had 4 different girls in acct and 3 safety guys and all have been paid less. Pretty soon, they're going to have to pay to work here.

I did the same thing at my previous job. Notice I said previous. I had a spreadsheet with black and white numbers and a new baby in the picture. The boss listened to what I had to say and gave me a chickenshit response to buy him some more time. That sounds exactly like what happened to you as well. My suggestion to you: start looking and find a company that cares about the employee. I am still looking, but at least in a marginally better situation than before. It's amazing how many shitty business owners there are out there. Unfortunately for us, it is an employer's market right now with the economy.

From my experience working with Engineers as a manager. The one thing that holds true in the last four jobs I have had is you will not promote or get big salary increases at the job you are in. You will need to leave and, if you like come back in the future.

You will most likely get a title change and a minor increase but to get the true payscale of a SR. Engineer you will have to put out a resume and try for a company that is looking for someone to fill that position. Fight for a title change, that will boost your resume.

How about just be greatful that they're giving you a raise at all?

Or at least be grateful that you have both balls and an education, unlike the guy who gave this advice.

Always request the best title possible. When the time comes to leave, its very valuable to have that in place.
