Why can't smart people become cops?

I keep reading in various cop threads that if you test too high on an admissions IQ test you'll get rejected. The most common reason is that smart people are basically over qualified and would get bored with the job.
Is this true? Can someone provide a link to this assertion?

Smart people question authority. Cops think they are the authority.

it's not true what so ever. it's just a job that requires little to no qualifications aside from a clean background
now state police is a totally different animal than local municipalities

There would be massive overpopulation of the canine variety.

I can't attest to the IQ thing, but it does seem they aim for middle-of-the road cops when it comes to municipal police forces.
A lot of these cops gone bad stories are with Sheriffs departments. Sheriffs are political animals and the deputies are all political appointees. There doesn't have to be any standard as to who they hire.
You don't hear as many dumb/violent cop stories about the State Police, who has at least some standards and protection against cronyism.

Makes sense.

According to a very basic google search, in CT, at least, yes you can.
Probably won't be an issue for you though

Federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit by a man who was barred from the New London police force because he scored too high on an intelligence test.
In a ruling made public on Tuesday, Judge Peter C. Dorsey of the United States District Court in New Haven agreed that the plaintiff, Robert Jordan, was denied an opportunity to interview for a police job because of his high test scores. But he said that that did not mean Mr. Jordan was a victim of discrimination.
Judge Dorsey ruled that Mr. Jordan was not denied equal protection because the city of New London applied the same standard to everyone: anyone who scored too high was rejected.
Mr. Jordan, 48, who has a bachelor's degree in literature and is an officer with the State Department of Corrections, said he was considering an appeal. ''I was eliminated on the basis of my intellectual makeup,'' he said. ''It's the same as discrimination on the basis of gender or religion or race.''
This one was from Conneticutt but it has been argued before in other states. for the idiots that thought this was untrue google could be your friend if you let it.

This. Smart people won't typically just go with the flow if they know what they're doing is wrong.
