How many HDMI ports do I really need on my TV?

Looking at some new TVs now. There is one I like, but it only has 2 HDMI ports but several USB. 2 seems low...
But I'm not a tech guy at all. I don't even use HDMI on my current TV, and I'm not a gamer (although I do own an 360).
Should I really look for a minimum of 3? What kind of things in the future, besides, say, a blu-ray player and digital cable box will I need to plug into it?
And can't I just get an HDMI switch box?

I only use 1. Everything of mine is plugged into my receiver.

The number of devices you currently have plus one more port. You might add a device but you're probably more likely to switch out a device for a newer one. If you have plans to add another device already get one that has 2 more ports than you currently need.
ETA:
And that's why you're seeing more sets with only a few ports. My 3 year old tv has like 6 or something ridiculous.

I use one and the rest go to the receiver.

Are you guys talking about your cable/satellite receiver? Last time I tried that with a game system through the cable box, there was a half second lag... Had to plug it straight into the TV.

Home Theater Receiver.
XBox, Cable Box, any other game system or device all plug in to Home Theater Receiver via HDMI. Then a single HDMI cable goes to the TV>

Half second seems like a stretch but I run my Xbox through my denon and have a game mode on my TV that has almost no lag.

A few years ago I bought an old Atari Jaguar and a few games off ebay for $25. I plugged it into the cable box for some reason, either because I didn't have enough inputs or didn't want to switch TV inputs or something. Anyway, I fired it up and started playing and it was just absolutely unplayable. If it wasn't a half second of lag, it was damn close to it. I was thinking "no wonder the Jaguar was a total fricking failure".
So then I swapped shite around and plugged it right into the TV and it was fine.

If you're not using a Home Theater receiver, the more HDMI ports the better but you always have the option to add a HDMI switcher which are not expensive.

Unless you do this and have a receiver, I'd say 4 is safe and the minimum I'd want.

1 on the back, 2 on the side or front

Even though I have an AVR, I need at least three on my TV. It's useful to be able to connect devices besides the AVR directly to the TV, because (a) some devices don't play well with the AVR for a number of reasons, and (b) it's usually possible to have completely different settings for each TV input. The latter is particularly useful when you have devices that use PC Levels (RGB Range 0-255) as well as ones that use the normal Video Levels (RGB Range 16-235).

OP should probably buy a receiver if he doesn't already have one IMHO.
I would definitely have at least 2 though, with one on front. So if someone needs to plug something into your TV, they can.

Yeah there's no reason to not get a receiver. Then if you ever want up mount it somewhere you only have one HDMI to worry about to fish through a wall
