I was trying to get something on demand last night (Pacific Rim) and it was offered in 3D. I didn't realize I had selected that option because it just said HD. How good is the 3D at home?

Not worth it imo. There are probably three movies in total that are worth watching in 3D. The rest do nothing for the movie and in most cases make it worse.

Not recommended. It's novel and you probably won't use it.

You shouldn't buy a TV for 3d, however the higher end panels have 3d. 3d won't really be marketed in a few years.

Right, you really can't avoid it above the entry level sets.

Yep, 3D was the gimmick intended to "save" the TV industry. What pisses me off is that the new savior is 4K, but based on the same old shitty LCD tech with lousy black levels, poor uniformity, banding and DSE, and so forth. I hope my ST60 plasma lasts until OLED become affordable.

No. I have one and have yet to take the glasses out the box. It's a waste of money.

I can't see broadcast stations moving to that without the FCC forcing them to. Cable channels and their carriers though... if the market is there they will do it.

I can't help but wonder if 4k will ever really take hold with 8k already on the horizon (although distantly).

This. Gravity and avatar are cool in 3D, but how many times can you watch those movies?

All of the other movies I have in blu ray 3D are boring. They add one or two special effects that are 3D. A waste of wearing glasses for 2 hours really.

This.

Hopefully this fad dies out in the theaters as well.

pretty much this. Don't pay the premium to get 3D, but the best sets seemingly come with it anyway.

My dad has one and we might have watched some deep sea documentary in 3D like once. Do NOT get 3D. DO get a 4K tv.

This is what happened to me. TV came with the 3d and smart tv. Never used the 3d and rarely have I used the smart features. It's all pointless when you have iphone/pad, Apple TV,roku, and xbox

3D TV is officially dead. it's a gimmick and I knew it was going to fail eventually.
LINK

Will 4K TVs suffer the same fate? Probably but I think it has a better shot of surviving than 3D. 4K content on a 4K TV actually looks good but 4K content availability will be very limited. and for now, 1080p looks dandy for general population.

We have one and we have used it exactly 3 times. Each instance was at the very beginning of the getting the TV. Cool but not necessary.
