Stalking around the Northern sector of the pond (where almost 100% of the snake activity has taken place).
12 gauge.
4-6 foot distance.
Sunning between the bank drop-off and waterline.
Recovery of remains was difficult, one section of snake was lost.
Not a big one, just looks so because of the angle/close-up distance.

FWIW, (for you snake defenders) I don't go into the swamp looking for them, but because the kiddos are getting old enough and wanting to fish the pond more, I've been working on eradicating the slithery foe.

Full choke?

It's weird how they're almost always on that side, especially about a 20 ft stretch of the NNE corner.

I'm usually a hard knocks type parent but I do draw the line at venomous snake bites. I do show them the carnage so they know what to look out for.

I am pretty liberal about killing snakes, all are welcome to die.

While I'm a diehard snake guy, I have no problem with people killing venomous snakes in areas that kids (or pets) frequent. I tell my neighbors to call me when they have a snake in the yard and I'll be happy to catch and relocate it, but they always call upon the shovel before calling me. One of my neighbors has a brother who got bit by a Copperhead when they were kids, so naturally EVERY snake that he sees is a Copperhead. If he ever calls me (for what is likely a rat snake), I'm going to tell him, "Damn right, it sure is a Copperhead!" Then when I catch it I'm going to let it bite me, scream as loud as I can, then threaten to sue. I know he'll fall for it.
