quote:

The museum at Ground Zero tells the dark story of the 9/11 terror attacks with spectacular artifacts and exhibits. It pays heart-wrenching tribute to the innocents and heroes killed that day. It also has a gift shop.

quote:

“To me, it’s the crassest, most insensitive thing to have a commercial enterprise at the place where my son died,” Diane Horning said. She and husband Kurt never recovered the remains of their son Matthew, 26, a database administrator for Marsh & McLennan and an aspiring guitarist.

quote:

“Here is essentially our tomb of the unknown. To sell baubles I find quite shocking and repugnant,” said Horning, who also objects to the museum cafe.

I'm not going to down play his suffering and grief, but I think he's being a tad emotional with his reasoning.

I mean, the Holocaust Museum has a gift shop.

I don't have a problem with it. It's not sacred ground.

This. I was just about to post this. I'd rather see the museum partially fund itself this way instead of having the government fund it 100%.

this......if someone is making cash, no. If it operates as not-for-profit and to sustain the museum, yes.

Vendors were selling t-shirts down there when the crater was still smoking. Does not surprise me.

This is one museum I will never go to anyway.

Ummmm... The Musuem charges admission. And it is a significant amount.

$24 to get in.

$700 million to build. Covered entirely by your tax dollars and private donations.

Agreed. My wife and I went to the Memorial when it first opened, but we do not plan on going to the museum.

I think a sighting of a bear was reported in Central in the last two weeks. Not sure how true but the person called the city official like he was going to take care of it.

It's not like a 9/11 gift shop is something new. They had one that you exited through when you visited just the memorial before the museum opened. I remember them selling those leaves of the survivor tree and my wife wanting to get them. I made a donation and left that place, I didn't want suveniors from that....

That was one of the saddest places I have been to, I don't need a token reminder to wear around about how utterly depressing it is...

Great post.

Oh, and, "Mom & Dad went to the 9/11 Museum & all I got was this lousy tshirt." Seems appropriate.

I've never been, but I'd be very surprised and disappointed if it were inside a church or cathedral.

I am a little curious who the target audience is. there are probably a thousand museums I'd rather visit.

To all those that lost loved ones it is....

I have no problem with a gift shop as long as ALL the money that is made goes to a 9/11 fund....

Tacky, but nothing unusual. Now, the price for admission is ridiculous.
