We are headed to Destin for a mini family vacation at the end of this month. I am thinking about taking my 3 sons deep sea fishing while there.

Have any of you taken a charter trip out of Destin? Does anyone have any recommendations for us?

thanks for the reply Sus-Scrofa. I am a complete newbie to tuna charters, my sons and I always wanted to do it.

have you used Kelly Windes? any recommendations on the time required for a tuna trip? is a 4 hr or 6 hr trip enough time to get off shore and catch some tuna?

He does all types of off shore, not just Tuna. I've done several with him of all time lengths. You'll catch fish.

I wouldn't do less than 6, probably should do at least an 8. His top deal Tuna trips are over night and spendy.

I'd just drive down to Grayton and take a charter off of the beach. Go down to Venice to go offshore.

If tuna is what you want......I would let the captain know ahead of time, and I think you wouldn't be able to fish for them with any less than a 12hr trip. I can almost guarantee you won't be able to catch them on a 4 or 6hr trip. Those trips are generally for snapper, and if you're interested in trolling King Mackerel.
If you are hung up on going out for tuna, I would just go out of Venice.

Going in July also. See where its around 175-200 and hour up to six people. Is this standard? Hows the back bay fishing in July? Or should we head out to sea? Dunno.

Bigger boat or smaller boat? Last time we went on a larger boat it was the Seascape with David Windes. Smaller boat, for 2-4 people, I'd go with Locked Up II. Steve Brown is the captain.

I second that as well. We used to go out on that boat once or twice a year. Always a great trip, but that was when it was multiple father/son trips. When we just go on smaller trips, my Dad and I prefer a smaller boat and no one else in the way.

I live in orange beach and fish offshore a lot. You will not be.able to go on a tuna trip from Destin on a 6hr . You would need to book an overnight trip 24-36hr. The tuna are 60to 100+ NM offshore.

You could go to the, nipple, and spur to basically open water troll for billfish and hope to get in some tuna. It's fun, wahoo, mahi, Marlin etc. then back in to catch your bottom fish. This would be an 18hr .. Leave.out at midnight, fish all day.

Or a longer trip 24+, run south west to the rigs , the Marlin , ran powell, the beer can then further out to horn mountain, deep water nautilus and etc. troll for billfish and tuna around the rigs. These are $3500+ but will be trip of a lifetime, especially if you get on some bills, and tuna.

Hope this helps some.
