It'll be you and a million of your closest friends packed into 1 surface acre these days.

Definitely do it. If you have a boat or can afford to rent one there, you'll have an awesome time.

I've heard the lake was down about 50ft. Not sure what that translates to out there.. Wondering if it's worth the trip

Its a lot of fun, the lake is super low right now though. If you are staying in Austin, that drive back after being on the lake all day can be dangerous.

There's not much water in it. We're in a drought that's slightly abated but hasn't ended since 2011. I have friends who haven't been able to use their boat in 3 years because their dock is sitting on the rock bottom.

It's falling pretty fast right now. No good rain in about 3 weeks and a forecast for nothing but sun all this week into the next.

It's less trendy, but try one of the constant-level lakes in the Highland Lakes chain. So Town Lake isn't a boating lake, Lake Austin is constant but very expensive and has mansions people mostly inhabit full-time, Travis is huge but variable, Marble Falls is constant but tiny, LBJ is constant and huge, Inks is constant but tiny and Buchanan huge but variable.

Go to Pace Bend State Park. They have a beach on Lake Travis. It's one of the few decent public places you can go swim and see some of the lake. There are cliffs that you can jump off too.

We're going out on the lake next weekend. Already have the boat reserved. Any recommendations on travel to/from the lake if we are staying in Austin? Any sort of public transportation?

You might have to cab it. I don't know of any other way.

If staying downtown, possibly Car2Go? Cab ride out and back will be very high...

ETA: nevermind, it looks like they charge by the minute and Lake Travis is outside of their parking zone.

You might try finding a Lake Austin boat rental on craigslist.
