Any marathon runners out there? I just ran a 1/2 marathon on the 4/13. Looking to move up to a full marathon. Looking for tips(the do's and do not's).

All I can think is why? Hot chicks hang around those things or something? Seems like a bullshite arse thing to do in south Louisiana in the summer.

Yea, I don't have anything positive to add. Good luck, work hard, eat right, get a big arse hat.

OT is where you want to go. Nothing but fat beer drinkers in here.

"Im gonna run to the gas station and grab another case of white cans"

This is about as much running as the OB does.

look up the Hal Higdon training program and tailor that to your schedule

stick with it

do's:
- drink something at every water station
- tape your nipples
- don't go out fast - find a pace group
- force a poo before your run
- if someone hands you a beer, drink it
- enjoy your first marathon instead of worrying about your time

do not's:
- do not skip a long run in your training
- do not start with the 3:00 pace group if you are a 4:00 runner
- do not eat something new the morning of the race

yep, Salmon has a good list. I used a Higdon plan for my first marathon and it worked well. What marathon are you looking at?

ETA: invest in a foam roller/stick to help roll out your legs if you don't have one already

This is really solid advice. But if you've run a half then you probably already know this.

Like an earlier poster said don't skip any long runs. The half is a good start but it gets worse. Miles 20-24 were a complete bastard. Don't worry about time just finish! It's a big accomplishment. You'll be glad you did it.

I did use a Hal Higdon training program for my training for the 1/2. Thanks for the do's and do nots's. I have those down.

I'm thinking of running the BR marathon in January 2015.

Plenty of HOT chicks at road races!!

The poo was well timed out. Early breakfast(3.5 hours before race) and a cup of coffee. The port o john's were packed for the last pee stops.

great race! Well run for sure. One small piece of advice I got from a co-worker who has run Boston twice was have fun and respect the distance.

I ran the Baton Rouge beach marathon. I really liked it. It was in early dec so it hadn't got too cold. I'm always worried I'll have to run in freezing cold in Jan.

BR Beach was my first marathon. 2 loop course and you run right by the 1/2 marathoners as they are finishing I guess it's all about what you enjoy running in. I much prefer running in colder weather so I will be running the Louisiana again.

Small Hijack:

Is Couch to 5K the best beginner training to follow?
I am in pretty good shape, and work out 4 days a week, including 30 minutes of cardio. I also do boot camp style workouts twice a week. I just started running a mile on the treadmill a couple of times a week as well.
Any advice is appreciated.

if you are in decent shape you will probably be able to skip the first 4 weeks or so

I followed the Hal Higdon for a half marathon. Did it from absolutely not running at all even though I think it was designed for those who run around 21 miles/week. It was easy while I did it. I made it to 8 miles with no problem at all. But like someone said, you CANNOT miss the long runs. I had one weekend when I went on a fishing trip and drank. Fell off the wagon hard after that. I have no doubt I could have kept going much further if I wasn't a lazy dipshit. The program works if you have the drive to stay with it.

the problem with marathon training

it really is a time commitment, especially in that last month or so

I ran Chicago last year and am running it again this year. All I can say is training in the summer in the south sucks arse...but it pays off in the end. Get a good pair of shoes.

Agreed! I usually buy 2 pair and rotate them throughout marathon training
