Say what you want about chains, we had a tremendous Good Friday lunch there today. I had the Eggplant Stack fried eggplant discs stacked with fried green tomato and crab cakes, topped with an etouffee-like crawfish and mushroom sauce.
Mom had the thin fried catfish. I tasted some and it was the best catfish I every had in a restaurant. The garlic fries were good too. I didn't taste my wife's fried oyster poboy with blue cheese and bacon, but then again, I didn't have to.

Ate at the Mandeville site ~6 yrs ago and it was very good. Not sure why I never went back. Great restaurant.

I wouldn't buy a meal from them if it was the last meal on earth.

I had the thin fried catfish fairly recently; mine was miserable. There was no fish.

This kind of response was not unexpected. I've had bad experiences there in the past - burgers so over-seasoned that I thought it was sausage and the seafood batter was inedible due to over-seasoning. Just saying, my experience today was very different.

My boss really likes it, so I end up there occasionally. Not the worst place in the world. There's far better, but there's much worse.

I like the shrimp zilla poboy from there. My wife's uncle managed one of their restaurants. Even before he took that job, I dknt recall ever having a bad meal there. I stick to the basics though. Always a shrimp poboy or similar.

It's not a knock of the quality of the restaurants they own.

For the price, there are many better places in No to get a meal: either Liuzzas, Coops, etc. The place is a freaking chain in every negative connotation of the word.

The one in Houma is well run and the food is good. I actually got a Roast Beef there and it was pretty good. I get my fries without the garlic...... im not into wet fries.

I've never understood the hate it gets on this board. Sure, it's a chain, but I challenge any poster to find faster, more convenient, tastier, better portioned, and less expensive seafood than New Orleans Hamburger & Seafood Co. Sure, their catfish isn't Middendorf's, but it's also much cheaper. I love grabbing a bite at the one in LaPlace before a cheap matinee movie. Way easier than fighting the traffic to go to Jefferson Parish or South BR for a movie.
ETA: there's no reason to eat at one if you can easily go into the city limits of New Orleans. It's great in the suburbs or outside the city.

I hate their seafood, but find the burgers to generally be pretty good. But now we've got much better places around for burgers so I don't go very often.

I've had the shrimp and fried green tomato poboy a few times since they changed it up at the foot of vets. It's good. I don't know if I'd eat an entree there. I remember hitting it as a drive thru in the 90's.

I have had a few good meals there. Not the greatest food in the world but it will do.

Some poor bastards actually live inside the city limits.
The place could be a lot worse. Take the one in the FQ for example. As a tourist if you end up there for a casual lunch you are doing ok IMO. Sure you could do better but you could be doing far worse.

My kid's favorite place for catfish.

This might be the most overused and useless phrase on this board.
I really don't recall seeing a great deal of hate on here. It's not like Raising Canes or Walk On's hate or anything for sure.
In fact, I believe one of the owners/managers posted in some threads for a while not long ago and it was some pretty good reviews.
As other's has said, it's not great, but for a quick family meal, you would do much worse. I've always had good service and left satisfied when we visited a location.

It's a great restaurant run very well. The one in Metairie and on St. Charles are top notch establishments that have only gotten better with time.
Name me a better, more consistent fried seafood restaurant with city limits? Maybe Deanie's. Maybe Drago's. I really think that a lot of New Orleans people hate on the restaurant because of the name and the chain feel. The food it puts out is excellent, consistent, and great value. Name a better fried seafood sit down restaurant within city limits.
No more a chain than any of John Besh's restaurants. And besides August, NOLAHS is better than all of Besh's restaurants.

Yeah, I agree. This is literally the first time I've ever seen it discussed on here.
