I thought it was hilarious and a very good call on Mainieri's part but my question is why did the Ole Piss runner take for home when it wasn't a wild pitch? Seems like they would bide time and not try to steal home or was the pitch tricky in the sense that the runner/third-base coach thought it was wild?

Suicide squeeze means you're going with the pitch not waiting for contact.

Suicide squeeze is when the runner on third breaks for home as the ball is being pitched. The batter tries to bunt the ball. If the batter succeeds, then the runner scores easily. If he misses then the runner is easily tagged out.

Sorry, I assumed suicide squeeze is when the runner is pushed between two bases; haven't played baseball since high school and living in Houston we don't get to watch LSU all the time (what, do you expect me to watch the Astros?).

Thanks for clarification.

I am not a baseball expert by anyone's imagination but I learned about the Squeeze the first year I played summer league as a little kid.

We had a coach that used it at least once a game! We learned how to bunt better than the rest of the league!

I've got a question.

How efficient just exactly is the suicide squeeze? with batting averages so low nowadays, say you've got a runner on 3rd with 1 out. Take chances swinging twice or just as successful to SS?

This is referred to as a rundown, not a suicide squeeze.

Rundown, aka pickle

The runner was caught in a rundown on a pitchout made during a suicide squeeze.

high risk, high reward. I would say a low chance of succeeding. Maybe 25%.

Is the safety squeeze that hard to execute? It seems to me like it's a much better choice than a suicide squeeze.

I am a huge fan of the squeeze if your team can handle the bat it's puts huge amounts of pressure on the D. Only problem is doing it with less than two outs your chances of scoring by swinging away are much higher.

Hence the word 'suicide.'

The only part of Bianco's strategy I question is going with the squeeze on the first pitch. Afforded LSU the luxury of pitching out.

Suicide Squeeze

steal home

To further confuse you this is two different things. Stealing home is much rarer than a suicide squeeze at this level. Back in the Whitey Herzog days of the St Louis Cardinals they had a jackrabbit named Vince Coleman. He did on occasion straight up steal home with no bunt. This normally required a lazy or preoccupied pitcher who was not paying him attention and he would get a walking lead off third and could beat the throw home when the pitcher went into his stretch motion.

Actually, if CBB is going to continue with this mickey mouse ball instead of the gorilla ball they used to play Maneri needs to look for player like Vince Coleman, Lou Brock, Ricky Henderson, etc that were usually referred to as walking doubles because if they got on first they were going to steal second and possibly third. This absolutely rattles pitchers to death when somebody like that gets on and it adds some excitement to the game for the fans.
