College debate enters the 'post racial' era

The Atlantic
It's a long read and kind of sad for those of you who believe argumentation should be logical.
Here is a short illustration of what 'rule changing' is about for those who don't want to read the whole thing.
Let's say I'm debating Rex. I have prepared all of my arguments in rhyming couplets. In my first speech I read the couplets proposing that all arguments in the round should be in rhyming couplets or they should be dismissed by the judge.
I warn the judge than any counter arguments by Rex asserting that this is stupid must be dismissed if Rex's arguments are not in rhyming couplets.
quote:
On March 24, 2014 at the Cross Examination Debate Association (CEDA) Championships at Indiana University, two Towson University students, Ameena Ruffin and Korey Johnson, became the first African-American women to win a national college debate tournament, for which the resolution asked whether the U.S. president’s war powers should be restricted. Rather than address the resolution straight on, Ruffin and Johnson, along with other teams of African-Americans, attacked its premise. The more pressing issue, they argued, is how the U.S. government is at war with poor black communities.

I have no idea what that is.

That article really demonstrates exactly how willfully stupid people(especially white guilt liberals) are willing to be in order to avoid being labeled racist.

I feel like this article will ruin my day. Not sure I want to read it.

No. My example about rhyming couplets explains the theory of rule changing. Black debaters use race to change the topic from the real topic to what they would prefer to debate...racism.
The same thing happens with feminism. It's called 'feminist jurisprudence'. The topic might be "Resolved: The govt should increase solar energy."
The feminist debaters have prepared material by women authors. They start the debate by changing the rules:
"We demand that all evidence in this round be from female sources. Any evidence presented by our opponents from male authors only enhances the power of a sexist, oppressive, male dominated culture."

time to have a different association for the people who can debate instead of shouting and keepin' it real ...

Subject shifting is done in political debates all the time. The idea is to shift the debate to the topic you'd rather discuss. For example, let's say that David Vitter is in a run off for Gov and is debating Cong. Liberal.
Vitter: Congressman Liberal, during your term as Mayor of Zwolle you ran up record deficits.
Liberal: Well, we spent a lot of money but we didn't spend them on whores like you did. No sirree.
Vitter: Congressman Liberal, how do you propose to create jobs in La.?
Liberal: Well, I may not create the kind of jobs you did hiring all those prostitutes and expanding the Wash DC whore industry.

I thought debates had rules (academic debates, not political debates on CNN hosted by that fat woman), and that you had to argue the topic presented. How can you discuss a wholly different topic and still win?
If I wrote my economics term paper on Native American pottery, I think I would have failed.

They mentioned someone trying that in the article and were basically called racists. It got shut down quick.

The idea of rules is an artificial construct created by the ruling class to oppress the masses.

My third year at LSU I missed an economics exam due to injuries sustained in an auto accident. A couple of days later I was ushered into the instructor's office and told to write down a single question which he dictated. I was told I had two hours to answer it. After twenty minutes of writing I realized I had no reasonable chance of answering the question so I took out a clean sheet of paper and wrote an entirely different question on it. A question I could answer.
Received an A and learned a valuable lesson that day. If you can change the rules and gain the advantage, do so.

Actually for those familiar with CEDA or NDT debate, it's actually a very interesting phenomenon. Not saying I agree with it, but it should not be dismissed out of hand. As debaters adapt, this 'alternative' method will fade out.

I don't get it, are they arguing that our Black, heads of Gov't are racist against poor black communities.....Oh, this is rich.

Yes. It should be dismissed out of hand. There is a topic. If you don't want to debate the topic go take up soccer. But don't change the topic to something that you want to talk about.

i don't think it signals the country is going to shite ... it signals that debate competitions in these particular associations, NDT and CEDA, will be a free for all ... so universities and debate teams can choose to participate in this new style or form another organization that requires something other than shouting ...
