He sucked.

These idiots want people to think the civil rights act was so important--it was not--that if offsets everything LBJ did in Viet Nam.

The DOJ had the power to protect people of color against discrimination before the CRA of 64. They just did not do it.

LBJ KILLED 50000 men by using the force of government to conscript. The slimy POS did not even believe we could win. He had no plan but not to be the first president to lose a war SO HE QUIT.

Anybody that respects LBJ is no friend of freedom.

What's that got to do with movie tax credits?

I consider it important, but I'm just one black dude.

Those two actually have little to do with one another. Overall LBJ was a pretty terrible president, but the CRA was a milestone achievement in US history. His social welfare programs so far over-reached that it's not even worth discussing, and Vietnam was a nearly unmitigated disaster (though he partially inherited that). I celebrate the "born-again racist's" efforts on behalf of racial equality.

Nothing. Why?? Thread about BP has nothing to do with film welfare either.

Seems the only threads film welfare advocates read are those critical of the film industry's extortion of Louisiana taxpayers.

The CRA did not convey not a single right that did not exist prior to it's passage.

It was important in that it re-defined those rights BUT Eisenhower and Goldwater were right. The rights were there and the government should have been protecting them to begin with. It was the democrats that fought them.

LBJ inherited a small military operation consisting of advisors in South Viet Nam and grew it into a major war using the draft.

The SOB admitted in a telephone call we could not win the war but said he would not be the first president to lose a war. His ego cost tens of thousands Americans their life.

You can't even compare that crap to his welfare or his CRA passage. Not even close in scale.

Adding new mandatory mechanisms for enforcement is as good as adding a new "right" or "law".

I don't compare or weigh them. I consider them separate. If not for Vietnam, LBJ would be heralded by many mainstream historians (esp. left-leaning University types) as a top 5 president. He's not even in that discussion because of Vietnam.

That doesn't diminish his sincere commitment to Civil Rights, however.

I'd like to take this time to preempt any misguided soul who wants to trot out that he used the word ****, btw. I know a great deal about domestic politics in this period of American history.

I'm waiting for you to make a point here. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the CRA. LBJ wasn't going to be left out of the commemorations. It has nothing to do with his escalation in Vietnam.

Don't bother to argue with these guys. They could care less. This is just another "thanks Obama" thread.

Dude, I left in July of last year because of their idiocy regarding Edward Snowden. I came back to fight and hopefully contribute to some kind of enlightenment. I'll try to be a bit more deliberate this time, though. There's no way to take on all the stupidity that occupies the first page of the poliboard and hold down a full time position.

Yeah I feel you. It's honestly depressing how bad this board is now. When I first started posting here it was fun now it's the daily blast of hatred.

I have learned to just view this place as simple entertainment and recognize that most of the "opinions" here are a very very small minority and not to be taken too seriously.

Keep up the good fight though...you are not alone.

Who would have voted against it???

Goldwater ran saying he would use the government to enforce the rights of minorities. Goldwater and Eisenhower before him believed he had the authority to defend citizens against discrimination. It was Eisenhower before the CRA was even conceived that sent troops to Little Rock.

Goldwater had a much better record in Congress on racial discrimination than did LBJ.

Republicans passed civil rights acts in 57 and 60.

Even the CRA LBJ signed got to his desk because 94% of the Congressional republicans voted for it. Only 73% of democrats voted for it.

Time magazine credited Republican Senator Dirkson with it's passage and even put him on the cover.

I wonder how many blacks even know his name now??

Obama's hypocritical arse should have been at Dirkson's grave today.
