Why were they made illegal in certain states? Their rep as cop killers up north? My limited exp with shows them to be an effective round but not so much that they are illegal.

My dad has a plastic baggie of 25 left for his S&W .40. Doesn't want to use them for home defense because he might get arrested for shooting someone with them.

It's black talon. Supposedly there are "spurs" when the bullet mushrooms. Supposedly doctors said that they created massive internal bleeding that they couldn't stop and out sometimes even cut the doctors if I remember correctly.

Wiki

Not illegal, stopped making in 2000, several rounds nearly identical still being sold

Rife rounds were made, but did not have the "talons"

I thought they came and went during the Clinton administration. Tons of bad press at that time regarding "cop killer" bullets and of course anything guns. Very similar if not identical bullet types brought out under different names and labeled for police use only. Still have some in 10mm-would hate to be on the receiving end of one for sure.

They were never made illegal. They only changed the name because people were butthurt over the name for some reason. I believe the Winchester PDX1 rounds are the same as black talons

They are illegal in New Jersey -- but not because they are Black Talons. The use of any hollow-point handgun ammo for self-defense by private citizens is illegal in NJ.

Black Talons was loaded with one of the first (if not the first) bullets that opened into petals (instead of "mushrooming"). Winchester took them off the private citizen market after a couple of years due to negative publicity.

Winchester later reintroduced the Black Talon ammo as the "SXT" cartridge. The SXT bullet had a typical copper in place of the black coloration that the Black Talon rounds had. The SXT was commonly said to be an abbreviation for "Same Exact Thing."

The SXT has evolved into today's Ranger-T ammo. Ammo sold under the Ranger-T trade name is now in its second iteration.

The Black Talon ammo was very good stuff. Today's Ranger-T ammo is even better -- specifically designed to not "clog up" as it passes through clothing.

Just get Winchester Rangers, they replaced the Talons and are just as good, if not better.

i shot some hogs i had trapped with both black talon and hydro shock ammo. if memory serves correct the hydro shock blasted thru all pigs shot and we had to line up two in order to collect the round. talons didnt require this, ie not as hot of a round. both rounds held together well despite hitting some bone.
