I want to get a beagle. What are the pros and cons? Will a beagle dig up my yard like a weiner dog? Where can i find a good breed of beagle?

Thanks

Escape artists. They will test you, espcecially males.

This. And they're kinda smelly by nature and not overly bright.

Are you going to use them for hunting at all?

I have a buddy who raises them. He has about 25 right now including puppies. I am sure you can get one cheap from him. Hell, he gave three away at a show this weekend but wound up buying two more.

This is the breed he just bought. Really cool looking beagle

Kept my little one inside, bit of a wuss. Never stopped barking while following the bulldogs around the house.

Literslly barked with every step while chasing them.

Died of bloat one day while I was at school.

Would not get another...the barking...

There is so much truth in that statement.

I love beagles. I've owned three. Great temperment and lots of fun. Great with people. They will test your patience sometimes, mainly because of their nose and the fact that they are highly food driven (which actually makes them easier to train). they aren't for everybody, but if you take time to train them and have some patience, they are great dogs.

I've never really had a big problem with barking. I just trained it out of them from an early age. They were all inside dogs too. They still bark and it is still loud as hell when they do, but it's once or twice a week at the most and usually because they are excited and forget their training.

Also, I've never had a problem with any of them smelling bad (or at least any worse than any other dog).

They bark all the time. Someone in my hood, 2-3 streets over, has one and I know when he is outside.

We called those "Blanket Back Beagles"... although those have a noticably short tail with no white flag on the tip. Are those docked? Because I'm pretty sure the breed standard requires a white tipped tail or "flag".

I used to have 2 of those Black Creek beagles. Badass rabbit dogs. I bred one to a regular saddle back gyp I had and she threw some great puppies. Those dogs were the last pack of beagles I had. I have the want to get back in it this year.

These are the first two he has bought. He said he heard good things about them. I think he said they are a year old.

He actually picked them up in albany this weekend at some type of buy and swap.

The only reason I'd ever have a beagle is to hunt rabbits. That's what they're for.

The people I bought my house from had two beagles they kept inside. It took weeks to get that dog smell out of the house. I have a lab/brittany spaniel mix that's been inside for over a year now and no one ever notices any "dog" smell. People who had the house could have just been total slobs, but I've heard they smell.

i have one. The only way I'd get another one is if I hit the lottery and I could pay an old man to keep a pack of them somewhere 5 miles or more from my house and I could just pick them up for mornings during rabbit season.

Beagles are great dogs. My current "lemon" beagle is my third. They don't bark more than any other dog, its a matter of training. Thier bark or howl is simply different than other dogs, not worse. People complain they are not smart, not true, they simply can be stubborn at times, but like mentioned earlier, they are motivated by food, so training is easy. They are "pack" dogs, which means they literally become a part of your family. They are great with kids.

We are on our second beagle. Both have been inside dogs. We live in the country where everyone lets their dogs roam. Neighbors would call to ask if our first beagle could spend the night with them.

No plan to hunt. Mostly a family dog for my 3 yr old daughter. Figured a Lab was too big for my yard. had a beagle when I was little but don't remember the "bad" about the dog breed.
