pretty interesting segment on how it's made, how the family runs the business, how they care for their island property, etc ... decent way to spend 12 minutes ...

according to wiki, they are a certified special supplier of Queen Elizabeth's palace, one of about 800 such suppliers from around the world ...

I use it as a component of my wing sauce, otherwise, it's not in my arsenal. Glad for their success though.

Nobody says that in new iberia...... Hell alot of locals use crystal or louisiana Gold..... But Tabasco has marketed themselves as well as any company in the history of companies, so good for them.... When i was in the army (91-99) we had a small bottle of Tabasco in every MRE

Earliest commercial brand marketed today. Quite an accomplishment. Five generations.

I'm a Crystal guy mostly but I do have a bottle of Tabasco for red beans, Bloodys and raw oysters.

I have both in the pantry. Mostly use Crystal (less "vinegary" taste to me) but I do like Tabasco.

I have Louisiana hot sauce and Tabasco in my cabinet. I use each one pretty equally but each one is only used on specific items. I don't really have much of an explanation on which one I use on specific items other than that's just how I've done it for years.

I absolutely hate regular tabasco. My dad has had a long standing practice of putting way too much of the stuff on almost everything he eats. You can taste it in the air.

Their green chili sauce is pretty legit.

I've been told that it's also Kosher. They have the -k- on every bottle. Any other Kosher hot sauces?

cording to wiki, one of the family members who was a brig gen in the military apparently had a small bottle incorporated into some mres ... the military eventually added it to most mrs ... guess a hot sauce of some kind will make an mre of any kind somewhat palatable ...

interesting to me is the fact that they send seeds to farmers throughout the world (mostly ca/sa, which accounts for a lot of people thinking they own land there) who grow the tabasco peppers for the company ... and the fact that it's aged in whiskey barrels (wiki says it's j daniels barrels) ...

I've heard the term, "Cajun Ketchup" quite a few times. I don't care for Tabasco... prefer Crystal, purely for flavor reasons. Nonetheless, it's an admirable American success story and a very well-ran company. I'm glad they've kept it in the family.

I saw the story on tv... not going to re-watch it. Did I hear correctly that they grow the plants for seed in A.I., but the production plants are grown in Africa and the mash is shipped over?

yeah, they use the plants on the island for seeds only ... think they ship mostly to ca/sa for growing ... don't know how much is shipped to africa ... one of the senior execs stated they've never changed the seeds that he knows of, so these are 240 year old strains ...

McElhenny's Gold was a very entertaining book. It talks about how they always had a McElhenny as president/CEO, even when it almost killed the company.

I like and use most of the aforementioned hot sauces but tabasco is the only one that taste good mixed with ketchup, on pizza and on eggs.

I went on a tour of their "plant" back in 1978. It was interesting to see the peppers in the wooden barrels, but breathing the air where the peppers were being fermented brought tears to my eyes. It was a very interesting tour and I'd definitely do it again. BTW, when you are leaving, they give you a tiny bottle of their tabasco sauce.

What are the results of a tabasco/ketchup mix?

I like it mixed with ketchup though I don't use ketchup much. I have a variety of hot sauces I use for different dishes. I like Tabasco. I like it directly on a cracker with nothing else.

I like Tabasco as well. But it's not my first choice. That would be Crystal followed by Louisiana. Then Tabasco.
