Could the events of 9/11 make for a good video game?

This question came up on a podcast a few weeks ago and I've been thinking about it. My first reaction was that I'd never want to play something like that but then it occurred to me 9/11 happened nearly 13 years ago and there are many 18 year olds who probably barely remember that day. Would a video game be a possible way of conveying, better than a book or film, what that day was like? Could it be done? If so, how?
(And I'm talking about the events of that day specifically, not the resulting activities in the Middle East.)

it'll happen one day.
will probably be from the fire-fighters perspective and maybe a side mission of the PA plane as the guys who fought the hijackers.

I'm not sure what role you could play in the game. We enact war games all the time, but I think this is a more sensitive subject. You don't see games about the holocaust or anything. I think it should probably be left alone.

I'm not sure how I would feel about flying a plane into the World Trade Center, bruh.

I forget where I read it and if it was an Activision or EA rep that said it but he claimed part of the reason so many FPS war games were stuck in WW2 for so long is they didn't want to offend folks that had that shite seared into their brains IRL who were potential customers. He said its also why most modernized war FPS games are alternate history timelines.
dunno if he was right but if so a 9/11 based game would have to be 30 or so years down the line.

I can't see any good way of making this into a game. The firefighters that went up the buildings would be a very short game with no way to really "win".
Just don't see any aspect of it in which it would make a good game.

no fricking way it will ever make it to post plot consideration
I doubt that wound will ever heal.

It could be like COD when the CIA operative got killed, multiple story lines. Play as a firefighter, do your best, continue the game as a SEAL/Marine in Afghanistan or Iraq. Murder Bin Laden and Saddam, cook cheeseburgers and hot dogs, frick blonde bitches in the park, light fireworks with a bald eagle on your shoulder. End game.

Yeah I don't think this is happening anytime soon. Especially the whole firefighter thing. Even though a lot of games are based during WWII, you don't go around saving Jews from concentration camps and stuff. I think some things are better left alone in video games.

Something like this. There were also firefighters who survived that were outside the tower. Could just make up a storyline. May not happen for years but I won't be surprised when it does. May not be an american company.

never happen. no way any company could stand making a profit from a tragedy like that. the public shaming alone would be monumental

Oh, if a game like this was made any time soon I wouldn't expect any large, mainstream publisher to get any where near it. I'm thinking it'd have to be a smaller, independent studio.
I can see a game in a similar vein as Gone Home or Heavy Rain. It could be more of an interactive story than a traditional game centered around solving puzzles, avoiding hazards, or taking out "bad guys."
Maybe you rotate throughout several different people affected by the events, get a feel for the people in their lives, who they are and then it's revealed during the course of the game what happened to them. One character might not make it into the tower that day (over slept) but you got to meet all of his co-workers the previous day. Another might end up on one of the doomed flights. And another could be a firefighter who may or not make it out alive.
I'm still not certain I'd want to play it personally, but it could be a more effective and educational experience than a film documentary, especially for someone too young to remember what that day was like.

I don't see a game like this ever happening. In a largely PC friendly country, something like this just wouldn't fly. If the general public can stop the sale of a game being sold on military installations (medal of honor) due to the usage of names regarding the enemies, then there is no way that they would be able to put out a game surrounding one of the most catastrophic events in US history.
For those who have no idea what I am talking about: Medal of Honor Banned

I was thinking the adventure/puzzler as the route to go as well, like a Telltale Games sort of game.
And if they made it, it wouldn't be 9/11 specifically, but they could make one that maybe has a different sort of target, different story to garner the same effect.
I just don't see them slapping the twin towers into a game with little deviation from what occurred.
The thing about 9/11 is, its isn't like WWII, or The Iraqi War. Its a very specific event, almost like recreating a named individual's murder scene, and that is why it won't be made. It isn't "faceless" enough.

Six Days in Fallujah still has no backing. No way 9/11 gets done.
