How many interviews is it realistic to go on before an offer?

I got laid off two weeks ago(company relocating to another city 5 hours away, and I moved for this job not too long ago, so it wasn't feasible to move unless relocation was being offered), and have been busy job hunting.

As of this week, I have a total of 7 in person interviews, and 1 in person next week. I also have two more phone/Skype screens.

Would it be realistic to expect a job offer after going to so many interviews?

To be honest, they are starting to blend together, and I have held back on sending out resumes today (mostly because I've been on phone calls/screens all day). I figure taking a break for this week wouldn't be terrible. It will give the market a few days to post more jobs, etc.

Generally they say about 10 interviews for each job offer.

Sounds like you are plenty busy, it won't kill you to wait a few days. Better to be sharp on the interviews than to get a ton of them.

Thanks. I figure I can probably send a resume or two out in the mornings before I start my day in the meantime.

Im 2 for 4. However, Id imagine 1 to 3 or 1 to 4 would be about right.

Well, I'd imagine what field you're in would matter.

Is the OP asking how many interview rounds are realistic for one employer (one job)? Or is he asking how many interview processes should you expect to go on spanned across several employers before getting an offer?

-If it is the latter, coming out of college I interviewed formally for 5 companies and got 2 offers.

The latter. I know usually the process is a phone screen, maybe a phone interview, then in person, usually a second interview and then decision.

I'm in marketing, specifically online content, SEO and analysis

That's impressive getting 7 interviews this quickly.

I do what you do as well. What company did you work for if you don't mind me asking?

I think we are actually looking for somebody. Small world lol.

If this is what it takes whenever I decide to go job searching them FML.

I expect to look at 1-3 places max and call it a day. There is a ton of research you can do beforehand to get a vibe on fit (although this is indeed the most important thing to evaluate during the in-person).

If you are brought in for an in-person, then you should be able to impress them enough to get the job. That's the easy part...getting to the in-person is the hard part.

Do I have a skewed view here? Recruiters are always coming to me so I don't ever put much thought into the effort it would take to land another gig.

In terms of the process, typically a phone interview and then office interview with multiple leaders. Depending on the experience level of the position, there could be a second office interview to meet more people. Often times, one office interview is enough.

I think this is realistic depending on your major/background/experience... Also, it depends on how competitive of a market your major is in.

Id say if you have a respectable GPA above 3.0 with atleast 1 internship, you should receive an offer within three or four interviews.

Update on Microsoft if anyone cares.

Second Skype interview scheduled for 7am (because it is a position where I will be working with people in London a lot and the person interviewing me is there).

I call at 7 am, and it turns out he had it scheduled for 8am. After that mix up the interview went well and I am waiting to hear back on a time and date for the in-person.

Have two more in person interviews today.

good luck.

i have a few friends that went to work for MSFT when my company laid a ton of them off. They all hated it and quit.

Stay away from windows and office businesses. They are really feeling the pressure. Dynamics is a decent place to be, as are any of their back office stuff
