A whole day goes by and not a peep from this board. Edward Snowden was all the talk when he was skipping from country to country trying to elude the grasp of our country's counter-intelligence police and the likes of Peter King and others were basically calling for a lynching, if they could have gotten their hands on him.

Well, yesterday he was live (via Internet proxies) speaking to an audience at Austin's SXSW gathering. Snowden speaks by Skype at SXSW

Anyone who doesn't realize the good he performed by pulling the curtain open and revealing the massive spying on Americans in violation of constitutional protections is an idiot. It's too bad as a contractor he wasn't afforded protection under the whistleblower laws and was forced into choosing exile or prison.

Those who say, "well... a real patriot would have stayed and fought" have never come up against the behemoth that our federal government has become. He is likely much safer where he is, at the moment. I hope he is eventually allowed back in and further, I believe Rand Paul, as president, might be inclined to enable this to happen. One can only hope another establishment war-mongerer doesn't rise to the top.

The man is a patriot. He was the talk of SXSW. I just hope that those gathered will extend their efforts to promote privacy and develop products for those using the internet.

Snowden is a man of conviction. Because of where he is from, I am assuming that he is a descendant of the early Snowdens of NC who migrated from Wales and were Quakers. That background may shed light to his strong convictions.

"The vast majority of the documents that Snowden – Mr. Snowden – exfiltrated from our highest levels of security, the vast majority had nothing to do with exposing government oversight of domestic activities," Dempsey said in response to a question from Rep. Mac Thornberry, R-Texas. "The vast majority of those were related to our military capabilities, operations, tactics, techniques and procedures."

As he hides behind Russian protection. Patriot!!!

Yeah I would definitely think of him as much more of a hero if he released everything and turned himself it.

you do realize whistleblowers have no protection working in a private contract firm...and that he reportes the abuse many times and nothing was done before he went public, right?

Sniveling cowards sacrifice everything to expose massive, warrantless gov't surveillance of their fellow citizens? Interesting. I think you're more of a sniveling servant to the almighty government.

Face it. No matter how you spin Snowden, he's a pussy. Plain and simple. Snowden's like the annoying little kid who starts a fight then, just before he's fixing to get his arse kicked, runs and hides behind the teacher. At least he got to frick Anna Chapman, so I guess his cowardice has been worth it.

It's simple, really. Assign him the same rights that you and I would enjoy as a private citizen. He was/is being denied those rights. Change the laws so that contractors can come forward without facing criminal prosecutions, but, our massive all-powerful government knows that they can't do that and they must make an example of Snowden to keep others from releasing information that casts a bad light on government's role in circumventing constitutional rights.

Face it, you'd never have the balls to do what he did because you'd be too afraid of what the government would do to you and too much of a pussy to leave everything behind.

Seriously, would you expose the government and then stand there and go to prison for nearly all of your life? There are no legal protections for citizens doing the right thing...your only choice is to sacrifice all you know and love for a life in prison or a life in exile. He chose exile - frickin' pussy!

The National Security Agency’s top watchdog slammed Edward Snowden on Tuesday for failing to follow official protocol in relaying his concerns about wayward intelligence gathering and also faulted Congress for not vetting the details of post-9/11 surveillance programs.

“Snowden could have come to me,” George Ellard, the NSA’s inspector general, said during a panel discussion hosted by the Georgetown University Law Center.

Ellard, making his first public comments in seven years working for NSA, insisted that Snowden would have been given the same protections available to other employees who file approximately 1,000 complaints per year on the agency’s hotline system.

“We have surprising success in resolving the complaints that are brought to us,” he said.

In Snowden’s case, Ellard said a complaint would have prompted an independent assessment into the constitutionality of the law that allows for the bulk collection of Americans’ telephone metadata. But that review, he added, would have also shown the NSA was within the scope of the law.

“Perhaps it’s the case that we could have shown, we could have explained to Mr. Snowden his misperceptions, his lack of understanding of what we do,” Ellard said.

And if Snowden wasn’t satisfied, Ellard said the NSA would have then allowed him to speak to the House and Senate intelligence committees.

”Given the reaction, I think somewhat feigned, of some members of that committee, he’d have found a welcoming audience,” Ellard said in a reference to outspoken NSA critics on the panel, including Sens. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) and Mark Udall (D-Colo.).

“Whether in the end he’d have been satisfied, I don’t know,” Ellard added. “But allowing people who have taken an oath to protect the constitution, to protect these national security interest, simply to violate or break that oath, is unacceptable.”

Quite frankly I hope the NSA sees this post right now. Later I'm gonna call my wife and they can listen to that too if they like.

WOW...I thought the days of this attitude were long gone. Hey, can the cops stop by and inspect your house this evening, too? Just to make sure their are no terrorists in there or nothing indicating you may have at any time ever knowingly or unknowingly associated with "terrorists" (with the understanding that the definition of terrorist changes over time).

wtf dp ypi want hjm to do? come back and spend the rest of his life in prison?

so because the government says its classified the ditizens dont have a right to know? well what if they start genocide and clssify it, are we allowed to know then?

I seriously want to know what idiots that cont like him want him to do. The man gave up everything he has ever known in life to help his fellow citizens see what a tyrantical government is doing, if that isnt patriotism then I dont know what is.

Imagine you work for a governement contractor and you find out that the CIA was using drones to kill Americans on American soil and the directives came from the very top(white house); would you be willing to give up everything you have ever known in your life to expose a tyrant? if not stfu!

more over would you be willing to be executed or spend every waking moment in a High security federal pen? if not then again stfu.

I love how republicans on here preach small government but as soon as somebody exposes how large and out of control our governement has become, that person is a pussy, a traitor, and should stay and spend the rest of his life in jail. sorry but Tchefuncte I havent seen you in the news for taking arms against the govenment so sorry you are a pussy. Just the way it is, sorry.

I'm not a Republican and cannot stand the Republican Party. I have no problem with what Snowden did, but have a serious problem with the way he handled the aftermath. I'm just glad our Founders weren't as "brave" as "Mr." Snowden.
