The recent revolving door of chefs continue at Upperline.

After a long stretch(20+years) of only two chefs, JoAnn has been running them off (IMO).

ETA: I had a buddy who worked there for a brief period. He said she was an absolute tyrant.

The last report I heard from Upperline was not good. Curious if anyone has any info on this one.

How is she running them off when one left to join the seminary and the other says he left because he's got a baby girl and doesn't intend to be a chef again?

Two chefs in 20+ years doesn't support your allegation.

Have you ever heard of those reasons for leaving a job?
I haven't.

Maybe she picked the only two chefs who wanted to end up in the ministry and as a stay at home dad.
I doubt it.

ETA: This is purely speculation as I initially stated. I think it's a very good restaurant that I've enjoyed many excellent dinners. I just believe her management style may rub some people the wrong way.

I thought he meant that they had two over 20 years and now they have a revolving door.

Not wanting to be a chef again doesn't mean the guy wants to be a stay at home dad. Did he say that? Chefs work some pretty crazy hours and I can imagine it takes a toll on family life. Maybe the dude just wants a job with more normal hours.

So, are you saying the first guy who worked there for 20 years didn't go to the seminary? Is he a chef elsewhere or does he have a job elsewhere?

Geez, the guy was a chef at her restaurant for 20 years before he decided to go into the seminary. He sure did work for the tyrant a long time before she allegedly drove him off to God.

Kids change lives. I don't find it unusual for someone to want to be around a young child and we don't know if he's going to stay at home or get a job with regular hours.

I'm not sure it even qualifies as "speculation". It's wild in any event as you've got nothing to support it other than your thoughts on her management style. I would expect this chef to be looking for another chef job if the only reason he's leaving is because of her style.

There have been 5 in 31 years and only 2 in the past 20 plus years and one of them was there for 20 years. It's not a revolving door (yet).

ETA: looks like Bridges is also working on publishing a book.

Not accurate.

Since Ken Smith left in 2010, this will be the 4th different chef.

Nathan Winowich
Anthony Spizale
David Bridges

Next will be # 4. The door is swinging.

I think he died.

Did she kill him?

4 in two years still doesn't support your speculation. Did the other two say why they left?

Me?

And, I don't think she killed him. I think he got cancer. There's a painting of him in the dining room.

Well, the first chef was her son, tough to get yourself out of that deal.
Second was Kevin Smith, he ended up going to the monestary.

Since then, they have had some major issues.

Truthfully I don't care if you believe me or not. This is the scoop I've heard and tend to believe it.

What have you heard, have you even been?

You seem to know all the names/players and where they went in this little plot so why are you asking questions about what happened? The real question is which one are you and what did she do to piss you off?

For the record I have never eaten at Upperline and do not know anyone involved in this supposed travisty.

I've been there a number of times and all times were successful. I've been since the last chef took over and it was the same as always.

Spizale has been several places since he left there. Wasn't he canned from Mannings? Was he at a Marriott after that? Where is he now? He doesn't seem to stay anywhere long lately, but I don't know why.

I'd never heard of the other guy. Was he the one who is her son? If so, does he count as a door revolver or was he filling in while she shopped?

Shame Smith died of cancer.

Hoo wee this thread is full of misinformation. Tom Cowan was the chef who died, who was succeeded by Richard Benz (who left to found Dick & Jenny's). Then came Kevin Smith (who did indeed leave the kitchen to go to the seminary).

Since Smith left, the kitchen hasn't kept a long term chef. Before that, it was pretty stable.

He's a mediocre chef.

Winowick had a cup of coffee there.

The son was the first chef that was there a long time.

4 in two years does seem like unusually high turnover to me, IMO. And maybe that doesn't justify the assumption that it's on her, but it doesn't seem like a COMPLETELY unwarranted bit of speculation. We definitely need more evidence to say anything conclusively, however.

I think what his buddy told him is probably what leads OBrah to take that position.

Where did Winowich go? I can't find anything on him after he left. It's like he dropped off the face of the earth.

Fairly certain he took over the kitchen at the Magazine St. Popeyes.
