It actually looked like a relatively stable place back then.

I think Iran was similar until the revolution in the 70s.

Extremism is never a good thing, kids. Everything in moderation.

Well, I would say this piece is "puffed" up a bit, but there is no denying whatever progress they were making in the mid-century was destroyed.

Hasn't Ron Paul said for years Afghanistan was a peaceful place til we started putting troops there?

Eta.. Or maybe not peaceful, but better than it is now.

It was until we overthrew the gov't in 1953 and installed a "Pro-US" guy.

That gave rise to nationalism that led to the revolution of the 70's.

Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Egypt (mainly Cairo) were all amazing places pre 50's-70's.

The Russians were there before us.

Obviously the conservative types over there didn't like their women running around with their own operating brains.

No, we did not cause this.

They had a nine year war with the USSR in the late seventies.

Communism caused this. Don't let propoganda make it seem like Afghanistan was all lollipops and disney world until 2002.

Goes to show what happens when the radical Muslims take control. Happens over and over and over.

For a contrast, look at Jordan. No radical Muslim stuff there and the country is relatively free and prosperous for a Muslim country. Still better, look at Israel.

Radical Islam is the most violent religion on the face of the earth and has nothing but oppression, death and destruction following in it's wake.

Maybe so, I just remember he said a few times if we got out of there they would be better off. Didn't we side with them over USSR in the 70s?

It was much better of before Russia showed up, that's for sure.

We just exacerbated a problem that was already started.

We sent them money and missiles. Stretched into the 80's. Rambo and Tom Hanks made movies about it.
