Anyone ever make this move early in a career? CE fwiw! Left for better opportunity and career related experience! Guess I'll know in 6 months if I made the right choice!

I've gone from big corporate to small and now back to big corporate. Both have their positives and negatives.

I'm probably about to do the same thing

Big is good. Small is good. Independent pays a lot better.

I work for big corporate as a ce. I'm trying to find something smaller. There is a lot of office politics and corporate bs

I left big corporate for small consulting last year.
Much, much prefer small
prepare to be micromanaged out the arse in big corporate firms

I'm not an engineer but I've worked for a small company (500 employees) and currently work for large one (35000 employees).
Like others have said, your own personality will determine which is better suited for you. Some people will say that you get more opportunities at a large company but I think you would be better off at a small, fast growing company as opposed to a cash cow, stagnant large company. There is also the downside of large company dynamics and inertia.
I personally enjoy the big corporate environment. You get to move to different roles without leaving the company and the stability (or perception of stability ) is nice.

This is why I left to begin with. I jumped to a small private company and loved it for about 6 years. Then a very large corporation approached me with the right offer and a huge ceiling for advancement.
As much as I enjoyed the private company, hiring on with my current employer was a slam dunk. I lucked into hiring on with a very big international company that had cutting edge technology and enormous growth potential.
Timing is everything.

I'm going from a 70k employee company to a 2k employee company in august. Looking forward to the change after 8 years.

Big to small or independent is my preferred direction. The "Big Boys" can instill some discipline, network connections and form. Take what you learn from them and profit. More risk but much more freedom, control, and opportunity for singular success when going from big to independent.

That's sort of my overall goal. Get the work experience and knowledge from a big firm early on in my career. I think the work I'll be doing and the role they'll have me in will be more beneficial in the future. I do think that in 15-20 years small consulting or independent, which is my ultimate goal, is where I will end up. I'm looking forward to the challenges a large company brings to the table! Thanks for everyone's input!

This is an ignorant statement. I have worked for a small company that had supervisors who micromanaged like crazy. I am currently working for a Fortune 500 and have an insane amount of freedom. Each company is a different animal

One of my best friends currently works for the company, and has expressed to be how much of a laid back atmosphere it is. Hopefully, they don't change that attitude in the next two weeks

I was with big corporate in a small satellite office. It sucked and the people were horrible. I liked the work but it was hard to stay motivated. I ended up volunteering for as much field work as I could get to stay out of the office. I quit after a few years and moved to another bigger city.
A friend worked at the same big company as I did before but different office in the big city. He ended up talking me into coming in for an interview and I was quickly hired on.
The office atmosphere is 100% different and is so much better than the podunk location.
If your friend says the atmosphere is good, then you are not going in blind.

I'll give you my take. Started off in corporate, went to gigantic consulting, in medium sized consulting right now.
Whatever you do, be in a growing area. Doesn't mean a growing company, but just wherever the growth is within that company.
It sucks trying to make a living as a partner in gigantic consulting. You end up with numbers that are nearly impossible to hit without selling something the client doesn't need. In addition, you move around a lot. That's no way to live.
Corporate is great if you have the consulting work ethic (40+ hours a week of delivery + 10-20 hours of working for the consulting firm). You'll kill it if you know how to get things done quickly and do a lot more.
Almost all of the guys that I know that spent enough time in consulting to get the thought processes and approaches down have done really well. Best of luck!

I'm a CE also, graduated in 04. Started out in a small company for the first 3 years, went to a bigger smaller company who eventually got bought out by a big corporate. Left the big corporate for another big corporate.
There really is no right or wrong answer, it just depends on the company.
Benefits are usually great at larger corporations but at small companies you can make more base pay.
