My friend is having a kid pretty soon, and I wanted to buy him a bottle of pappy, as I know it's one of his favorites, however I've had no such luck tracking one down.

I'm not a big bourbon drinker so I was hoping you guys/gals might be able to shoot me some suggestions for a fine bottle of bourbon that might be more readily available than old man van winkle.

Price range: anything up to $150 bucks or so I suppose.

Make him some Poor Man's Pappy!

Pick up a bottle of both W.L. Weller 12 (90 proof) and Old Weller Antique 107 (107 proof). They will cost around $20-$30 each. Start off with a 50:50 mixture of the two Bourbons.

Or wait for the real bourbon guys to come in and offer suggestions

Col. Taylor is some pretty good shite. I think it's about 80-120 a bottle depending on the vintage.

Unfortunately, you're not going to find much right now as far as high end bourbons. The only way you find them is ridiculously overpriced on shelves, moderately overpriced on secondary market or come across some gems in the middle of nowhere in a small store that doesn't know what they have.

Does he like Scotch? There are always some higher end ones that are fairly easy to get and really tasty.

You could try to locate a bottle of the Bookers 25th anniversary that is being released right now. I can't tell you how it tastes as I haven't opened mine yet but it's rare and falls in your price range ($100). Still gonna be hard to find but you have a better shot with that than anything else right now

Thanks for the suggestions fellas. I've made a list and will hit the stores this week.

Unfortunately I'm almost positive he isn't a Scotch fan.

You can still find Elijah Craig 21 yr. It's a good one, having a glass now. It's right around $150

Son or daughter? The reason I ask is I had a gentleman buy me a bottle of my favorite (at the time) the day my daughter was born. He presented me with it (and the receipt) and gave me this instruction: open this bottle the day your daughter is married. I thought it was an incredibly classy gesture and one that I hope to pay forward.
