It's no surprise, then, that Kaepernick wants to get paid as a franchise quarterback on par with the monster contracts signed by Cutler and Romo in the past calendar year.

Kaepernick is seeking more than the $18.2 million annually that Cutler received in early January, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Monday.

If the 49ers aren't willing to meet Kaepernick's asking price, he hasn't ruled out playing the 2014 season on his salary of $973,766 and cashing in as a free agent next offseason.

Crazy what the QB salaries are now.

He needs to know his role. This same team got just as far without him.

Looks like the 49ers will be choosing door #2.

He's definitely earned a raise but I hope for his sake that 18 million a year was just the opening shot in the negotiations and not some line in the sand.

He's not even in the top 5 most important players on that team

Keep dreaming, Kaep

In case Kaepernick and the 49ers have forgotten, their last 3 drives this year ended like this:

Down 20-17 in the 4th quarter, Niners with the ball

3rd and 6 at SF 29: (Shotgun) C.Kaepernick sacked at SF 23 for -6 yards (C.Avril). FUMBLES (C.Avril) [C.Avril], RECOVERED by SEA-M.Bennett at SF 23.

Still trailing 20-17

1st and 10 at SF 26: C.Kaepernick pass short left intended for A.Boldin INTERCEPTED by K.Chancellor at SF 40.

Now trailing 23-17, Niners with that ball and driving deep in Seattle territory

1st and 10 at SEA 18: (No Huddle, Shotgun) C.Kaepernick pass deep right intended for M.Crabtree INTERCEPTED by M.Smith (R.Sherman) at SEA 0. Touchback.

Letting him walk has to be the easiest decision ever.

I think they're surprisingly low paid compared to what other high profile professional athletes make.

Teams should be punished for over paying QBs that haven't accomplished anything.

Kaep better start lighting it up in the meaningless regular season like these 2, if he wants that kind of cash money.

He's staring straight at the transition tag next year if he doesn't either start getting serious or at least be the next Super Bowl MVP.
