How Did Brett Favre Succeed in Mike Holmgren's WCO?

Something has always confused me about Favre. Holmgren ran a version of the WCO at Green Bay. However, Favre was hardly an archetypal WCO QB. About the only WCO feature that Favre possessed was the ability to extend plays with his (albeit, limited) mobility.
However, he didn't possess the kind of intelligence, the subservient discipline, or the ability to throw a tight, accurate spiral in heavy traffic requisite of the WCO system.

You are thinking way too deeply about this

By not giving a single frick whether a reciever was covered or not

There's a good NFL documentary about Favre. It has a clip from a meeting with Holgrem going over the WCO playbook.
You can definitely tell that Favre is struggling to understand the concepts and terminology of the system. He even had to ask Ty Detmer what "nickel" meant.

So Favre was an idiot who didn't listen to coaches and also threw a shitty ball?

I think some QBs could use a little of this with their elite receivers. Its 3rd down motherfricker, throw it to your #1 and let something happen.

Especially if your #1 guy is Megatron.

Because he was one of the GOATs.

He completed 62% of his passes. I don't know how intelligent he is or isn't, but we've all sent dick pics before. So I don't think that makes him any less intelligent.

I was measuring his accuracy by his touchdown/interception ratio. His completion ratio was outstanding and probably saved his career. But Favre did his best against single coverage. Even so, he still tried to force it into triple coverage instead of going through all his reads like a WCO QB is taught to do.

All quarterbacks are taught to do that.

All QBs are taught that, but not all of them do that.
For example, Dan Marino once told Bill Walsh that he didn't care about looking for the first or second read. He just dropped back and looked for the first open receiver he could find.
Brett Favre was more like a classical QB like Dan Marino than a WCO QB like Joe Montana.

I think you're putting to much emphasis on the offense and not the player

He had a great feel for screens. Backs never had to wait on a fluttering duck, it was drilled in their numbers and they could turn downfield. Really the same for TEs & WRs...when he wasn't throwing to the other team, that is. Sterling Sharpe held up his hands in an interview once & they looked they'd been in a wheat thresher from catching Farve's passes. With an arm like that he didn't have to be Steven Hawking.
