Sick dog question: Update - he pulled through

So I walk into the shed this morning, and one of my dogs is just laying there with heavy, labored breathing. He was unable to lift his head, and I saw where he'd crapped in the bed (solid) which is unlike him. He may crap in my bed, but never his own.
I pick him up and take him to the vet, and when we get there he is able to stand and walk, but is not very steady. He is almost 14. He's a min-pin, which I know is not a cool OB type dog, but he was my wife's and has become mine.
My question: Does the OB's collective instinct, based on this limited info, say that this is kidney or heart failure, or simply a bug? I can't think of anything in the shed he could have gotten into that would mess him up. The shed is heated/cooled and dry, so its not a question of being cold or the elements.
He was fine yesterday, but he is old.
Do I need to prepare for bad news?

I don't know, but good luck with the little guy.

Damn Lee, that sucks. Good luck.

If the vet doesn't take a blood sample ask that it be done.

Thanks. I'd be lying if I said he was a "good" dog (in the sense that he didn't dig, or chew up the fence, or piss on the Christmas Tree)--but, he's my dog.
I have a little Rat Terrier girl dog who would kill for him, and I think she knows something is wrong. Wife said she just stood by the window and howled and whined when he left.

how'd his nose feel? hot and dry?

I haven't done any research on MinPins but it sounds like your doggie might have had a seizure. Pooping in its bed and labored breathing, and not being able to stand normally all sound like the little dude had a seizure last night. JMO.
ETA: Sorry to hear that he isn't doing well. Keep us updated.

There is no use in speculating, my friend. It will only make you a mess. Just wait for the vet to get back to you. One step at a time. I'm sorry about your dog.

Was my thought too. Had a lab that would have them about once a year. He'd crap and piss all over the place, tear up everything around him kicking and seizing, then come out of it groggy. He'd be fine shortly thereafter. Vet said not much you can do. He died from something else, after having seizures for about 8 yrs.

My parent's border collie has seizures pretty often. She basically locks up and lays on the floor. For the next hour, it looks like she's hammered when she's walking around.

What do his gums look like?
Posted on 2/21/14 at 1:34 pm to ZacAttack
Didn't check his gums before taking him to the vet. Nose seemed fine.
It appears most likely heart related. Getting an x-ray. Will know more later.

He had an embolism. As bad as he could have had and still survive.
Dr said he could have another, and die in his sleep. I said ok as long as he's not suffering. She said he isn't.
He's got some high powered meds to hopefully prevent another one.
He is definitely feeling much better now. Right now he's curled up with the girl dog, sleeping at my feet.
Thanks for the input and support. Dogs are awesome-even ones that piss on brand new Christmas tree skirts.
