I have to admit, i have been trolling a little but it seems that the F&DB has taken a turn in the last few days. How long before "we" become the OT...or is that a stretch of projection?

Speak freely, my people, without fear of prosecution. Im just trying to iron this wrinkle out via constructive conversation before we find ourselves amongst the midst of the OT.

Every board has certain "group think" stereotypes caused by people trying to conform to certain standards enforced by subtle feedback. On the OT, it's being a misogynistic, ego-centric, frat-tastic, rich douche.

The M/TV board it's hating certain shows (Big Bang Theory, Family Guy) and movies and loving certain other ones (Game of Thrones, Community, Breaking Bad).

On the F&DB, it's hating chain restaurants (even if there's only two locations), hating anything that costs less than $25/entree, everything must be 5 star restaurant quality that's cooked from home, anything frozen is crap, anything from Whole Foods or Trader Joes is crap, if a tourist has ever gone there, it's crap, if people ever go there not wearing slacks and a button up it's crap.

The board goes through fluctuations. You learn to deal with a restaurant being the greatest thing EVAR until everyone tries it.

6-12 month projections....
Pho is overrated
Ethiopian will be food the new craze
Barcadia BR is a shell of the tradition that is Barcadia NOLA
Chain restaurants are only quality if they have a location on Magazine Street
4miles is banned again
GitM is only good when Andrew takes it right out the tank for you
Pliny will still be terrible
Firestone Walker is meh now that BR gets it

That's a mighty big paint brush you're white washing this board's posters with. Like almost anything in life, the truth is more nuanced than the easy generalization.

not really. the food board is no where near as ridiculous as the OT.

food board is the one board that is filled with honest and genuine answers and you pretty much know what youre going to get every time you read it.

your examples suck btw

i dont watch tv so i dont know what the mtv is about

Probably started with "Best burger in BR" multiple burger threads going at the time.
Then "Best King Cake"

Attention to the FBD thread brings OTers to this board.

what i think brings OTers to this board is that the OT can be really god awful most of the time and theyre probably just tired of reading shite nonstop.

it just sucks when they bring their ot-style posting here

Try as I might, I'm can't think of a TD board where that principle is consistently applied.

Wow, so much fail here. Were you just typing shite because it felt good?

I think that, while there can be a bit of a snobbish air about this board, I don't see it "turning OT." The whole topic of food and drink lends itself to lots of different viewpoints. I think most people on here have an open mind to begin with, or they wouldn't be prone to discussing food and drink.

I hate when people say this. The people that do clearly don't read the board at all.

The F&DB gives more praise to local casual joints than I ever see for fine dining.

I WISH. We can't seem to get a decent Ethiopian place going in SE LA.

Exactly. And any decent food-related website, magazine, forum, etc. will have the same snob aspects. That's the whole point. These are people who have a deep enough interest/passion/hobby in food and drink that they are discussing it with strangers in their free time. Obviously, you're going to get a little snobby about it when you see people forking out money for poor quality.

Just like if you were a computer expert, you'd get snobby when someone pays thousands for a poor quality computer.. or insert any other item in that sentence.

I find it absolutely hilarious when people accuse us of only liking 5-star fine dining restaurants. Some of the most highly rated places on here are hole-in-the-wall joints.

This board will always be important to be because I trust the opinions of people here. It's small enough that I know who to trust and who to ignore. I've found more gems here than anywhere else.

As far as real, practical take-home information, this board can't be beat.
